Monitors

Post by EndorShores »

I know this has already been discussed before in the past. But I figured I would ask the SP fam about this to get some fresh perspectives. I have been making music using my living room surround sound as monitors. The surround sound caught on fire :| So lately I have been mixing swapping back and forth between a pair of iphone earbuds  and a pair of technics rp-dh1200's. So yeah i am in the market for a set of monitors. Any suggestions of a good pair of monitors in the cheap to midrange price? Also what are some of your thoughts on mixing on monitors vs. headphones vs. regular stereo systems?? Any insight would be much appreciated, thanks ya'll.

i dont recomend monitors, because i havnt ever had good results and they bang to hard, maybe i was doing it wrong, but i get best monitoring with cheap old speakers. not subs, just regular speakers, like a boom box or something small and light weight. monitoring with the amp low works best for me, to get the truest sound. I Alsostay away from home stereo equipment for music production. except tape decks.

Depends on your budget man.

I use a pair of Samson Resolv 65a at home (which were pretty damn cheap) and a pair of Mackie HR624 in my work studio to listen too. The HR624 are expensive mind, but sound so good. The samsons are a little noisy, but overall not bad.

The KRK Rokits are nice :)

you 'll get the best mix if you listen on all of those things: monitors, headphones, stereo, boombox, car, etc...

i use some cheap tascam monitors, they're a little more harsh than the krk's but do the job. honestly i would say for hip-hop you don't really need monitors, just a stereo system and dj headphones like your technics will work. those two things will tell you when you have too much bass in your mix, which the monitors (because of their flat response) will not. nine times out of 10 when i mess up a mix its because of too much bass. i went crazy boosting on monitors then took it out to the car and its all boomy

worked at a studio in manhattan and erykah badu's engineer used cheap sennheiser walkman-style headphones and a boombox in addition to the expensive monitors, and you know how those mixes turned out...

100% quote.
the more "systems" you have, the better and different listens (and results) you get...
also "crappy" monitors (pc monitors and such) are accepted, of course accompanied by other systems

i try and stay away from sub sonic bass lately, not the subsonic effect, just super low bass, if I end up using some i turn it down to where I cannot hear it.

I think mid bass, kicks and bass, where you can hear it from a regular speaker is better, although. I was listening to some modern pop music and the transformer bass sounds pretty good, wish I had a synthesizer or something that makes sounds like that. I am aiming to make "ace of bass" type music lately not shure why.
