best headphones for hip hop production

You're going to get a million replies with different suggestions anyway, so here's mine!

I like the Audio Technica's a lot, but for a few bucks more you can snag something that'll last you a bit longer. I like the Sennheiser 595's, actually I like the whole lineage of Sennheiser studio headphones. Flat response but not so harsh that I can't do some easy listening.
Currently I've got the AKG 701's which are alright but dollar for dollar I think the Sennheiser's are a better deal. The AKG's can be a little on the harsher / brighter side to my ears whereas the Sennheisers are a little smoother in the mid to lows.

Don't miss the Roland RH-200S/RH-300, they're just about the same specs as the Audio-Technica ATH M40/M50 (I do prefer AT as a brand though).

Only bad thing I can say about the RH-200s is that the fake leather might start peeling off after some time.

Beyerdynamic stuff seems highly regarded (DT 770).

I guess open back headphones are not an option? Definitely not great for recording/sampling with a mic, but most people say they prevent fatigue and provide better response for mixing and stuff.

i have the ATH-M40fs. they're ok not amazing. i'd like more bass for hip-hop beats, these are flat monitors. might be better off with DJ headphones with bass instead of studio monitors. the sony mdr-7506 are classic monitors, you see them everywhere. my favorite headphones ever were some portable folding AKG's that are out of production.

i've had ultrasone, beyerdynamic, sennheiser, grado. all good stuff. for some reason i've always loved the way some sony's are colored with some crack in the high mids.
check turntable lab, they are recommending the technics dj1200's, the AIAIAI tma-1, and urbanears plattan.

It's possible to get good mixes with just headphones. Definitely not ideal but if you get to "know" your headphones you can make some surprisingly good mixes. If anything they definitely let you hear more detail, although ear fatigue occurs much faster.

If you got budget and means, get some monitors. Otherwise no stress until it's possible.

and why would you only use just headphones or monitors for mixing?

yeah the bulk of the mix is done on monitors but a headphone reference gives you perspective. things like reverb are gonna be louder on headphones

I use sony MDR-7506 headphones, they're my favorite. had to buy three pair over the years, but only because they were stolen and my dog chewed up a pair. A good piece of advice somebody gave me is that, if you have to use any old headphones to mix, first play a song through them that you have listened to so much that you know what it sounds like in the car, on the boombox and on headphones. then you can make educated guess as to how approach your mix
