Any tips for remixing using SP's?

Can any of you describe your workflow? I'm talking about the traditional remix of taking an acapella and making a new beat over it.

Especially curious how you do this if you use the resample method? I know you could find out the bpm and use the pattern sequencer, etc...but thats not how I want to do it. I know Madlib remixes a lot and I'm curious how he achieves this with using the SP.

when I used to do this, I would make my beat first, then try to tap the tempo to match the acapella, while resetting the beat, keep ressetting the beat untill it matches, usually rap is around 80 to 100, so if you have samples in your beat you may need to re stretch them.

i would listen to the acapella from the speaker and get a hihat going on the sp with gate and loop on. when you have a fixed speed that manages to match the acapella for 20 secs or so, you can build the beats around it. that's how i usually do it (or i speed up/slow down the acapella to match a pre-existing beat)

if you have an sp with external resampling (e.g303) make your beat, resample your acapella over it matching the bpm with a turntable.

theres no ex resample on the 404 so...

ill resample the acapella while adding the elements under it live.

ill start with the hat, then the snare, then kick, chops, bass etc.

to get the levels right though ill first do everything with the pattern sequencer (@ 99 bars so theres no awkward timing)

then onced its mixed down. redo it the resample method.

i'm assuming your acapellas aren't on wax?? if they are learn to ride that pitch fader fool!!!

but really, you gotta familiarize yourself with the song first, listen to the first few bars a ton so you know exactly the flow with which the first words and bars come in over the existing beat, then it becomes easier to cut it in on time and hear which way its drifting with respects to your beat

once you got it in sync though, its super fun to cut in the acapella at different times, usually on an 8th note, like a beat and a half early or late, or whatever really, loads of fun though, and sometimes you find a way that makes the acapella really match your beat in a cool new way
