SP 404 or SP 606

Post by Afentoe »

Hey guys,

I´m working with an MPC 1000 right now, but I want something to add a special kind of vibe to it.
I think the MPC is limited with its effects and I can´t really do my thing with it like I would with software.

So I checked youtube for some peeps who also work with an MPC and to see what extra´s they got and what kind of sound they make.

So I got my eye on the SP 404 and the 606..
I can buy the 606 for 160 euro and the 404 for 180 euro, both used yes.

I don´t really care about the price difference, I just want to have the 1 with the best working flow, live and in the studio in combination with my MPC.
I saw the extra effects on the 404.. and that you can assign 1 effect to each pad, I really love that.
Wonder if I also could do something with that with the 606..

Can someone please give me a pointbreaking difference between these 2? I really can´t decide.

the 606 is imo a professional studio and live sampler whilst the 404 is useful for it's portability.

In fact the 606's offers the greatest flexibility in terms of effects. You can use 2 different fx's simultaneously. The 404 will only do 1 on any or all of the pads.

I have a 606 and a 555 and i find the audio quality of the 606 is far superior.

I've owned the 606, the mpc1000, the 404 and now have the 404sx.

All of these units have their pros and cons.

The 606 has the D-beam, which is nice when controlling the filter. It also has velocity pads, 2 fxs, 16 pads and a wave editor. I found the 606 like the mpc, an all rounder.

The 404 has newer fxs than the 606. The djfx looper (heard on loads of Dibiase) is the classic effect on the 404, which is the main reason why I went back to it. I also find the 404 very fast to grap, cut, chop and arrange a beat. I mostly use it for creating an idea, then track into ableton to arrange.

It all depends on what you're wanting to do.

I prefer the 404 the 606, but that's my workflow now, super fast!

606
Better sound
2 effects plus a dbeam filter (42 fx all together?)
Built in synth, 1/4 inch ins and outs
More banks
Better sequencer
External resample
Slicer
Batch/bank export
Compact flash 512mb

404
(24 fx)
Dj fx and looper
Portable
OG 1gb compact flash
SX ??gb SD

I dunno where you heard the 404 is able to do separate effects for each pad!? I think thats only possible when you resample with the given effect

How fast is the 606? Is it faster than the 303?

I found the 606 really slow when getting close to max polyphony. Sometimes there'd be a delay between pressing the pad and the light coming on.
