Can 505 record samples while sequence is playing?

So like the title says, can the 505 do this?

Also can it work like the 303 where you can record incoming audio while resampling pads?

man, i think sp505 cannot samples while sequencer is playing. i saw this option only on the mpcs and on the mighty st224...
for the second question ihave try this. (as far as i know this is possible on the sp606 too.)

Thanks Ella, after some research it seems it can't do either of these things. I was also disappointed to find that it doesn't have a step edit either. You can edit events in track microscope but no x0x style step editing.

i discovered that very recently:
the sp606 have step rec and the 505 haven't it. right now i'm recording crazy drill'n'bass drums (squarepusher/aphex twin/luke vibert etc as we talked some times ago) with my mc909 and i saw that the 606 got some possibility more for that way of producing than the 505. step recording is very helpfull for that aim (for microwaving too).
sp606 got also a roll (until 1/48) that is helpful in realtime recording for glitch/drill sounds: after recording it you can manipulate notes/samples and gate/velocity in the microscope edit mode...in theory i think about this method as a sort of arpeggio (as i'm abusing of real arpeggio on the mc909)...
in conclusion: the sp505 can do theoretically this too, but you have to be a little practice of softwares called trackers or mess with notes positions and calculate them (but once is done this is valuable for ever)...

You can record external source while resampling, I do it on my 505 to record live bass over a loop. You can also record the ext source pad in the sequencer, I read somewhere on here that someone used this to drop in some scratching into the beat through ext source with everything BPM synced to it.

For step sequencing on the 505 you just have to know what numbers on the micro edit correspond with the 1-16 steps. step1 is 1:1:00, step2 is 1:1:24,
step3 is 1:1:48 and step4 is 1:1:72. From then on step 5 would be 2:1:00, step6 2:1:24 and so on. This is how I used to use my 505 when I first got it by using my Electribe EM1 to sequence drums in the SP.

this example for every timing valuable or is just for 1/24 timing? i mean that with the "sp606 roll method" i can variate from 1/4 to 1/48 timing (in real time rec)...in the step rec (on the 606 still) i can variate from 1/4 to 1/32...

The step 1 being 1:1:00 and step2 being 1:1:24 and so on is 1/16. To make it
1/32, step1 would obviously still be the same, step2 would be 1:1:12, step3 would then be 1:1:24 and so on.

so this means that ,when on 1/16, we can still insert/manipulate notes between 1:00 and 1:24, we can insert a note to 1:12 (the half of that) or their multiples 1:6 or 1:18 in order to record crazy drill rolls...i will try is on my 505...

I noticed this when I was messing with my old EM1 and turned the resolution from 16 to 32 to see what would happen (having absolutely no idea what I was doing back then). The result was everything was double the speed in the EM1 but it would still transmit the original BPM via midi and would transmit 1/32 note messages in to my 505 sequencer. I used this a lot for drum & bass tracks so I could have 160bpm chipmunk drums over 80bpm laid back samples.

it's exactly like that that i discovered 2 weeks ago the "roll method" on the 606...

the microscope edit of the 505/606 it's the same as for the mc307 (except for the pitch bend and other settings)...

If you're after the Squarepusher/Aphex Twin drill rolls I suggest abusing the DR660. That thing is (according to an interview with Tom Jenkinson about Go Plastic) what he used for his drill roll/granular synthesis style drums.

yeah i owned an dr660 some year ago trying those things, but at the time i wasn't really into midi, i was just at the beginning.
T Jenkinson also used other machines like tr707 as master to slave the dr660 (wich played the akai s950 samples until 1/64) and an sh101 or the tb303 (those last 2 synced via din out with the tr707), also helped by an atari computer to sequence the s950 or the yamaha tx81z...

in any case, the sp606 got a roll resolution (1/48) very cool to sequence it's internal notes/samples...

Ok so to clarify things up.

505 can not sample while a sequence/pattern is playing
505 can resample ext source while pressing pads.

The track microscope can be used in place of an xox style step editor.

The values for timing conversion to 96ppq is in the manual. It's just a more complete listing of what was said in the above post.
