SP 606
Anybody here with a 606?
What's your experience with it?
I know that there's a fine little sequencer, where you can view your chops in the display..right?
But i remember reading somewhere that the sound is thin? or thinner than the sp 404..

Re: SP 606
I use a 606 in combination with an Mpc2k...I sample/chop with it and the beats go through the 606 with efx on the way out of the MP...I like MPC sequencers so I can't really tell you much bout the 4 track on there, haven't used it much at all, but it seems useful enough - the efx are versatile and dope, 2 efx at the same time is dope, the mastering button can be useful, compressors are more subtle than 303 or 404 but more versatile and useful in the end for me...the sound is big and punchy, bass heavy even...I think the sound is thicker than the 303 or 404 (I have both)...just not as dirty or crunchy, I found the 404 to be the brightest of them all...I think when heads said it was "thin" what they meant is that it wasn't crunchy like you can do with the 202/303 and 404 to lesser degree...I dig 606 a lot now...this whole tape was 606/Mpc, but the sound texture is all 606 http://sinapse.bandcamp.com/album/stray-neurons-vol-1

Thanks sinapse.. ill see if i cant get my hands on one.. a mpc would be great aswell.
Re: SP 606
my experience man
pro:
graphic,2fx simultaneously (+dbeam with filters+master effect=4 fx in total), soundcard/usb controller, a (little) synth inside, sequencer (+microscope editing), ROLL, chop
cons:
bugs when too much datas are playing, lack of pitch function (but that's me, i'll explain it later*), clipborad button makes just one sample per time to copy, soundcard: the f*****g Roland didn't update it to win7 64bit..., not possible to add/modify manually chops points
*=
i also have the sp505, for me this machine is better than the sp606 as standalone, but sp606 is better than the 505 when it's connected to a pc. way better, it's more conceived for that. that's explain the lack of pitch function and other things.
ps
compression effect is better on the sp606 than on the 505.

what mpc you're searching for?
all the mpcs got a very nice sequencer, but remember that:
-the 2000/2000xl/3000 etc don't make resampling (as intended in the SP way); plus they don't have any internal fx...
-the 500/1000/2500 make resampling and have internal fx (well, SP fx are way better than those, frankly); they also make the resampling of the main out (so you can resample sequences _patterns_)
-the 2000xl got the best mpc pads (and some says it got the best mpc sound: but this is very personal)
other question: do you plan to use it with the sp404?

i got a 2000 (not xl) and it is very good
i like the sound but maybe it is a little too clean for me
the 2000 got only one internal fx: LPF (low pass filter) that it's not bad at all
i use it all the time, great to do bass sounds
great ad/da converters
but it lacks a folder manage function, this means you can't save samples and programs in different folders like in the mpc2000xl
the sequencer is great
2 midi ins and 2 midi outs
sorry for the offtopic

continuing the OT
it's ok, i didn't consider that as an effect but mostly a part of a synth (as every synth got filters, lfo, pitch etc)...mpc seems mostly as synths without internal tones if you see what i mean, plus a great sequencer. more or less as the ensoniq samplers too...and that's not bad at all...

you're right
it's a filter not an effect
sorry for the misundertand
i agree with you about the fact that samplers like the mpc or the akai s serie are similar to synths
the s950 got adsr, lfo, vca, lowpass and other features that many synths have
Re: SP 606
the 606 is amazing
if you have a simple phrase sampler that you can run stuff through and pitch it before you send it to the 606 it can be an amazing piece.
the pads bang and its loud as fuck
and the mastering effect as well as the two other slots allow for some super fat sound.
and it has mute groups and a synth thats actually really bad ass
get it and read the manual.

i made this
http://soundcloud.com/ormo/brass-brooms
with an sp606
and an akai s20
i would sample the stuff into the s20 then pitch it
and play it into 606

Re: SP 606
I got it, but it's in the pawn shop at the moment. To be honest, I erased the internal sounds on accident (whoops), but by the time I got my memory cards for it, I had bills I had to take care of, and I just need to get it back home, and spend some quality time with it and hopefully load up a bunch of samples into it, and hopefully I'll be straight with it.

2nd. Like all the SPs it is kinda limited but when you start looking at how to get around those limitations get ready for some zen sampling (+ resampling) skills. The SP606 will def help you get that 3rd dan in sampling.
I can see why Sinapse uses the MPC's sequncer, but the 606's sequencer as a stand-alone is pretty decent. 4 tracks per pattern, up to 32 bars per track.
To add to Ella's list->
Pros:
- can resample external sequencer patterns with midi start/stop messages (great for getting loops)
- only SP with panning (might be wrong about that though)
- really shallow menu-diving, the functions in the sampler are well thought through & easily accessed (other than the hidden synth)
- no shitty MPC style save-load processes, what's entered into it gets auto-saved
- fast workflow (ie recording into the sequencer can be done live, track by track in one take)
Cons:
- only has 8 voices, stereo samples count for 2 (makes sense)
- small pads (can make two handed jamming a little uncomfortable)
- bare minimum of 1x audio in/out & 1x midi in/outs, not easy to midi-thru (so use it as the master in your chains)
- won't take anything larger than 512mb compact flash cards
