hi guys
i have to do a present in july to my old son (he will be 7 years old at that time) for his birthday.
so he asked a nintendo ds.
i can found it used for like 80€.
but , damn, the gameboy it's just 15€!!
what's the main differences!?!?
due to my (old) age i tend to think atari console or commodore 64 are the best. ok , don't laugh please :) . i'm totally lost with those relatively new games.
i know that with the Ds you can also play music or paint etc
...so i thought that you, the young headz of today ( :) ), could help me on this one...
thanx
ps
do you like wii? it could be cool for a 7 years old boy?

Hey Ella. I'm also super old, but I'm a gamer.
The are several different Nintendo DS, so you might be able to get yr wee guy a DS lite for fairly cheap. He may be wanting the DS 3d, though, so you should find out. For handheld stuff, I prefer the Sony PSP, but that's just me.
I have the Wii, and I like it. There isn't as much selection for the serious gamer, but there's a good and varied catalogue and because Nintendo is discontinuing the Wii (in its current form) you can get them faaaaairly cheap. Most kids will dig what the Wii can offer. And you might too!
Good luck mans.

There are a ton of old games available still to purchase for relatively cheap here in the states still for the Nentendo DS, DSI or DSI XL. I play an XL almost every day and I really enjoy it a lot. For kids, the device is a lot more sturdy than the PSP and even though the graphics may not be as good the interaction is easier and more available for kids too. Korg has a "game" for the DS series as well and I have the older version bit not the newer, upgraded one. The DS is rad still but Nintendo came out with the 3DS a year or so ago and their focus has shifted to that console. Most new games coming out worth much are coming out specifically for the 3DS even though you can play almost all the old DS games on the 3DS.

hmm..personally, i think 3ds would be most wise to get.
Wii is cool..but ina while they gonna drop Wii U..so there probably won't be a lot of new games after that any more..
Same thing with o.g. DS i think..
I still play o.g. gameboy sometimes..but the kids of today would probably hate that shit haha

yo ella

I agree with you, the older console systems beat the new games by afar!
As said before, be sure which DS the kid wants exactly (one of the original DS(like DS Lite, DSi, DSXL), or the new DS3). The DS3 is cool because the graphics are 3D! Most newer games will only function on the DS3, for that. The Wii is definitely a good choice and very child-friendly(and also cool for older people), like all the Nintendo products. There are also a lot of ports of old games for the Nintendo consoles.
I have the original, old DS, and I bought a flashcard called the R4 that let's me download the games from sites that rip the games for free. You might want to look into those, because they saved me a lot of money
I don't have much time for playing on it because of school and everything though :(

I have to say, though, that the future of portable gaming lies more in the smartphone products. It might be even a better choice to buy him an iPod Touch! There are great games in form of apps these days.

You can check out this link to find the best rated games for the DS/DSi:

Most of the best games for the consoles are made from Nintendo themselves!
And here's a personal favorite of mine:

I'm not convinced on the whole iphone/ipad'phone style gaming being the take over in gaming. I own an iphone and an itouch and love the aspects of both devices the games are no where near as long, the controls are weak, and the games have very little depth. Maybe some day but I think that even though the resolution is there and the device is powerful enough, I just haven't seen a Zelda type adventure game come close on the iphone. Although I can bug the crap out of my friends and family at all hours of the night with wordswithfriends.
(I wrote out a long reply but erased a good chunk and left this)

i would say 3ds (even cheaper then the dsi) + flashcard (so far, for nds games only) or a wii with an external hard disk. it became really easy to install the softhack. it's true that the system is almost dead, but for 75€ you'll get lots of fun stuff and i think the new wii u won't be as easy to hack...

hmmm.. I'm sure I wrote a reply a day or two ago but it disappeared? Someone's moderating heavily or I'm going mad since this happened earlier too.

We have DSi XL and it's great for the whole family. You can have the Korg DS10 synth for it. You can make fun animations with the included Flipnote studio app.

And if you buy a flashcard for it (costs less than a full priced game!) you can run homebrew apps, many music apps have been made, check this link:
http://remaincalm.org/index.php/ds-music-apps

With a flahcard you can also use the gameboy emulator to play original gameboy games - they run really well.

If your son want's the latest thing that "ALL MY CLASSMATES HAVE" go for the 3DS, it basicly has the DSi inside. But the DSi XL has the luxory of big screens.

Well, it certainly wasn't me :) , but I too had somewhat of a deja-vu here. Perhaps the DS got mentioned in a thread before when it comes to the Korg program. :)
