if you have a velocity sensitive midi controller you can play stuff in live running the sound into the 303 so its almost like your 303 has velocity.

the 303 GOT velocity
the sp pads don't
but if you use a midi controller/keyboard you can have different velocity
i tested this the other day with the mpc2000 via the sp midi in (connected to the mpc midi out)

depends on the software you're using to send velocity midi messages

Do you have an external sound card/audio interface? Most come with a MIDI interface.
