I'm lucky to live in a smallish city with strong history in hip hop culture since the mid 80's. Here we have the younger DJ's playing the golden era stuff and everyone likes it - well those who like hip hop that is :). But now they've left me way behind with their mixing skills and they have all those rare songs on their seratos and I'm stuck with my good old 12"'s.

Damn, I was just about to rip shit about your post based on that start (didn't realise you were setting up a point), but everything you said was spot on.

In 20 years time the kids everyone's ripping on here will be ripping on the generation that's coming after them. That doesn't mean the next gen's music will be shit, just different.

Dang yo, I'm glad you kept reading haha...I was thinking about it some more and I have a lot of young fans...most of them were exposed to my music through their older brothers or sisters who are closer to my age. It's not like kids aren't going to like music that sounds good...it's all about the way they are exposed to a certain artist. If a kid isn't being exposed to diff kinds of music, or making the effort to dig for it on their own, then they are going to go with what the mainstream media outlets provide them with...and that is like 85% of teenagers that buy music.

Hey, this is my first post here, long time lurker tho! I had to reply to this topic, cos I feel the same way.

Everything these days is so homogenized, from music to the way people dress. It's like, every producer now, they all look the same, everyone wears the same shit and even SAYS the same shit. It's crazy.

And there seems to be a really large gap between, say, kids who grew up in the late 90's or 00's compared to dudes like myself, from the previous generation. I'm only 25 years old, but when I walk down the street all I see are these kids in this 'uniform' of like sports gear, and they're all the same. No matter where you go! And again, they all seem to talk the same way, have the same opinions, do the same stuff. And you know what, they are all critical of everything.

Which brings me to my main point, it's like everyone seems to be so cynical these days. Music critics, hipsters, youngsters etc. It seems like everyone takes the first opportunity they can now to like diss anything at all. If they can pick some holes in it, to make themselves look smarter or something, they will. I mean, in music, I think it's important to have some naivety or sense of wonder about what you're doing, and it's what sparks originality. I think this really disaffected, cynical attitude is what's to blame for everything being so samey now. I don't know what's to blame for that attitude though, all I know is that it's messed up, where does it end!?

Rant over lol
