i wanted to find out if i sample a bass tone is there a way to play it across the sp the same way you would with an mpc were each pad you play would either play in high or low notes.

i don't think that can be possible.
i believe that the sp haven't multilevel
correct me if i'm wrong
but you can pitch and resample a bass sound to create a melody with it
wich sp model do you have?
i got the 303 and it's not possible with it

No. But you can sample each note you need onto a different pad. Pitching a single note and resampling would also work, but wouldn't sound as good.

keep in mind that the sp 808 doesnt do that well with bass sounds and clipping. I noticed that everytime i sample a bass, i get a clip at the start and end points, mostly on the end point. Then when you add some compression it gets even worse. I tried to do exactly what your talking about a while back and the clipping was so bad i gave up. Just sample nice grooves and iso/filter the fuck out of them and make bass notes that way. Usually you only end up needing like 4 bass notes at a time, unless your making some crazy fucking shit!

have you tried to adjust start/end points of the bass sample?
i think it can help to avoid clipping
you got to put the start point at the very beginning of the oscillation:

same for the end point

yes sir. Just that the 808 clips a lot. Id sample a kick and trim the start and end point and still get a clip. Im thinking it might be my zip disk or the drive being old and not running sounds too clean because sometimes i get a nice chop and other times i get the clip. Most of the time its because of the sounds im trimming, usually heavily compressed and bassy sounds. Ive sampled a kick drum and trimmed off the end to make it shorter and didnt have this problem.

sometimes i got the same problem with the sp1200
not very easy to trim samples with that machine
but generally i do like lo-fi noises and shyt like that
