Multi-Track Recorders??

Ok, so when people record vocals with Microphones is that mono? Since there is only one input?

Do you mostly record in stereo from the SP?

If you record only from the Left out for example, won't the track play with sound only coming from the left side? So you basically have to record in stereo in order to have even sound?

Also, let's say I'm using an MPC with 8 outs, does that mean each out is going to be recorded in mono?

8 outs are mono (sp1200 or mpc is the same)
but you can pan the sounds left or right when you make the mixdown
so you can balance let's say the snare on the left channel, the kick on the right, etc etc...

if you want stereo, record the signal twice and get your pan on. Its also cool to do it this way giving yourself more control of the stereo signal. Could possibly eq then differently, maybe more highs on the right channel and lows on the left, get some freaky resulty. Then when you do a simple tremolo or woobly pan, you can make some crazy ambient sounds where you never know where in sonic space shit is happening.

I use a VS880 and although it took a minute to get the hang of things, I use it for basic needs of just recording shit. I know it can do a lot more than what I use it for, though. It's got a nice mode where you can 'scrub' your track and find a perfect spot to put a marker on which I like. You can also shift forward and backwards tracks that don't line up correctly. It's also got something I was never exposed to before this unit called virtual tracks, which means you can have several different 'versions' of tracks loaded in the background of main track and swap them out or even combine them to create a 'perfect track' made of several versions and takes. I don't use the inbuilt effects much, so I can't really say much about them, but they seem to sound good from what I've heard.

Like most roland products of this type, they went for features and ignored interface and user intuition. I imagine a Korg multitrack recorder (do they make one?) would probably be more intuitive and fun. Most of their stuff is.
