That was pretty cool. Never been a Tom Petty fan, now less than ever.

Interesting how the producers of the article didn't mention that Robert Plant sampled a song he co-wrote. Or that pop music has made an artform of copying & appropriation long before hip hop. Or that the first cases of sampling were done done by sound artists with tape loops. Hip hop musicians didn't invent sampling, they it made it better.

Pretty funny too how Beastie Boys got sued for using the Turtles & then Coldcut (as DJ Food) took the piss with this beat.

.
for robert plant: that's funny, he sampled himself, so he autocited himslef (what an ego :) ), i didin't noticed that they don't mention this thing.
for pop muzak: 100%agree (but nobody speaks about it, please give us links> one rapid example "sympathy for the devil" by rolling stones "loaded" by primal scream -and i'm a fan of screamadelica-)
for tape loops & hiphop:200%agree, we can say that hiphop non-musicians put that contemporay art way breaking into popular music rules...

Not to take away from the theoretical aspects of this conversation, but whenever Prince Paul is featured, you can see the Casio RZ-1 sitting next to him on his right hand side

Oh yeah, the Coldcut bruvahs are clearly using an Atari computer with either Cubase or Notator! My Atari will be up and running in another month or so!
