This is a film about cultural preservation. Digging Culture, Vinyl culture, Hip Hop culture. In this film some of Hip Hop greatest producers take on the challenge of digging in the crates with a budget of only $40 to find drums and grooves to sample to produce a beat.

From my favorite hip hop blog - http://www.unkut.com/2011/05/video-king ... -nyc-2010/

check out the positive vibe goin on in this 1 hour documentary

Did I miss something?lol-there were never any beats made, and the doc didn't at all follow the premise in its description. This was still alright though..but for real, with the exception of a few cats, there was a huge lack of humility(humbleness) in this imo...thanks again though el,peace

i tried to watch but it was really slow moving and i couldn't imagine watching for over another hour after the first 10 mins. i seen this other doc one time, was called secondhand sideshots or somethin, was a bit faster moving, altho J Roc was the only cat that made anything ill in that doc, but it was same premise...just faster moving

I completely understand the ideology behind the vinyl esthetic, but times have evolved. Every media medium should be used for a beatmaker/producer's advantage. I think it should just boil down to if you have an idea, find a way to make it sound exactly the way you want it. Fuck the norm. And these cats in this vid.... good for them for "being" there in the moment., but that was a few years back. It's called age, it becomes harder and harder to keep up. Shits history for a reason.

I think when the record store owner was speaking on kids "stealing music"- he was more reffering to the mindset a lot of youger people have now that have grown up w/the internet-and free music- I don't think music means quite as much to people nowadays as it used to-it's become so disposable, and a lot of younger people take it for granted. He wasn't speaking strictly from a diggers perspective-back in the day as a kid you actually had to find a way to get money to cop tapes & records, save it up,and be real choosy about what you got-i mean it was a really BIG deal when you just got one new tape or album,ya know?lol....your music was something you truly cherished-not that people don't now-but it's just not the same. BUT from a diggers perspective-to me,and I think most would agree that do this-going digging for records ,taking them home and listening to them, finding those gems...is one of the most rewarding parts of this whole shit- for me it's almost more fun than making beats out of them-because by the time you get to flipping them, they've kinda lost that "oh shit, you hear this?" value-to you anyway-not the people that will be hearing the final product :D but other than that, the dude from ultramag very suprisingly came off kinda assholeish imo-it was kinda funny to see him pointing out average, standard well known shit like he was really putting people onto something, like in almost a confrontational manner "what yall know about this"? it's like chill man, you're talking about the bongo break and skullsnaps, lol. cassanova came off as whiny- you could tell he was getting on minnesotas(the cat with the toothpick) nerves,lol-him and psycho les imo were the only ones conducting themselves on a down to earth level,as well as the store owner. And again, what happened to making beats w/ 40 bucks of records?

Anyway, yea,as you can tell by my posts the last couple days,i have mad exciting weekends... 8) still I enjoyed it though

hehe, I just pasted the whole description of the movie from the site and it seems there will be more parts of this documentary where each of these guys actually make some music.

After like 40 minutes it indeed started to get a little boring, and the overall "tempo" was dead-slow, but I enjoyed watchin this one, and hearing from those vets.

Yo Sin, I guess you meant secondhand sureshots ( http://vimeo.com/channels/dublab/page:9 ) which was even doper - I wanted to include it in this thread but forgot the exact name of it - its where they acutally make some beats.

peace to the crate diggers!

that shop they're in, which is a1 records, is a complete rip off. even at one point in the doc when someone is diggin through he comments on the prices and how high they were. but that place prices are through the roof, kinda bums me out and makes me question what determines the value and price of a record now days. makes the dudes at a1 look sort of hypocritical in my eyes along with other well known shops in the city, but at the end of the day its all money. sucks how people have begun to make money off of the artform, but i guess it's like anything else. anways, stole a shit load of records from a1 in spite, felt good.
