One of the things I didn’t consider when getting the 404 sx was its lack of vinyl sim compression. Instead, the sx has separate compression and vinyl sim, but ITS NOT THE SAME. I was wondering if anybody here has a workaround for the sx in order to achieve that vinyl sim compression sound like the og 404. Any comments or suggestions are much appreciated! :D

the way vinyl sim works compression works on the older SP's is different and I think even the compressor itself, the standalone effect, is slightly different. You're not going to be able to get that same sound. The closest I think you can get is to turn down the volume of all your samples to about 60% of normal after you did all the levels at full volume, then kick on the compressor with knobs one and 2 all the way to the left.

That's about as close as you'll get, me thinks...maybe you can get closer using that as a starting point.

or use the limiter mode (FUNC-8 ON) and go MFX12 with CTRL right CTRL 2 LEFT CTRL 3 right

The vinyl sim on the og 404 is more versatile for me.
i.e more easily applies to various beat types.

to try and get that og vinyl sim sound on the sx....
closest id say would be compress(mfx12) every sample individually.

sequence your beat.

then add MFX16 as a master effect.

will lack that ducking/volume fluctuations but will have that lo-fi compressed sound.

These are some interesting techniques! I know I'll never be able to replicate the same sound exactly, but I'd definitely like to try and get a close as possible.

I actually dig the MFX12 comp on the SX... the paper-ripping sound that is introduced when pumped... lolz

similar to what others are saying, I think...

1. leave limiter OFF, turn Sustain all the way right, Attack just barely up (since no limiter, gets harsh quick), Level all the way right.

2. For the drums , keep volume high (snare/bass), for the music/hats, turn the level somewhere between 30-70, depending on how much pump you want (lower volume = more pump)

I miss Vinyl comp on the SP505, but I think the 404sx/555 do a good job with some tweaks

The "lofi comp" on the 555 is very versatile btw, shame its not on the 404....
