hi guys, i've got some questions about drums editing into the SP 404.

how do you edit your drums into the SP 404??? what are your favourite effects in drums editing process?

i work with one shot drums sounds, kicks, snares, hits and hats... for the editing process i use only the Eq and the Vinil sim comp. for kicks and snares and reverb for snares and hits.

i read that the SP can't import short .wav files...can the SP 404 import kicks and snares one shot samples?

gated reverb, filter+drive, chorus, layering compressed and distorted drums. too many to name. join the battles and find out how to take drum sounds from almost anything. just gotta put in a lot of time and practice.

I find breaks on records and chop em to get the individual notes. Then I usually add Vinyl sim comp or regular comp(<for stupidly hard kicks) Some EQ and maybe reverb if it needs it.

I agree with frantic I use a basic mastering effect chain for my drums and the signal path is compression to boost the sound and make it fuller, then eq them to shape the sound more.

I for instance borrowed a full drum set. Sampled 3-5 hits of each piece onto a basic (magix) recording program. I went thru, picked out the hits I liked, chopped'em up, cleaned it up IN the recording program. I then saved each one individually as a wav file. Loaded all of them up (like 36+) onto a flash, threw em in some banks on my SP-404. They were all one-shots, I had no problem with any of them being 'too short'. Then on the SP I resample or whatever to switch'em up. It was a bit time consuming, but my hits were smooth and clean.

Yeah for a sample to be too short you would have had to zoom in super close in your program and chop something like a fraction of a milisecond 'cause I chop hi-hats close all the time and they always load.

ya, effect 12 is tricky but usefull for making those super hard drums. You lose some of the natural sound but its cool on certain things. Basically, the SUS knob is sustain. Thats how long the compression holds the sound once the attack kicks in. The ATT (or is it ATK ?) is how quickly the compression responds to the input sound(s). And LVL is just the output level. Im not assuming you dont know these things, just writing them for other and in case u dont :) but experiment with it and it can be usefull.

I'm always sampling from vinyl.
A lot of times I just let the drum loop rock if it fits the sample.
Most of the time I'm chopping the break into individual hit, if I do that, I apply effects before chopping. It makes them sound choppy and less 'hi-fi'

I hate drums that sound like they are presets.

tnx man, cuz dont know these things :) i'll try to work with the effect...big props for ya beats...sick shit...i love your bassline, what do you use? samples notes at different pitch? the pitch in the SP 404 sucks...i use Acid Pro 6.0 for pitching samples.

Dr.Sample ya beats are sick too...grimy dirty sound.

Thanks, I agree Dj Frantics music is dope. What did you use for those basslines Frantic?, it sounds like pitched notes put through the subsonic effect.

If you grab samples from vinyl you get the best of both worlds. They have already been produced ( meaning they have been recorded and mastered to the best ability of the producer at that time ) and you get the sound of vinyl so i try to grab as many drums as i can from records. As for processing them in the sp i think it is important to get the very best signal into the sp ( right before it clips ) and then a touch of compression if needed but if you get great drums you shouldnt have to do much besides record , layer repeat.
