I think it really depends on what you need. The SP-606 is a great sampler with lots of sample time and effects, but really needs to be paired with a keyboard to create music. You can record your patterns onto your computer through USB. Push the menu button and select the USB option (I think its the fourth one). Switch the input to "mix" and the audio goes both ways. I use Audacity to record patterns and then sample back into the SP-606. It's a pretty easy work around and ...

You're right...you can't use the effects unless you've looped the phrase. I never used the effects on the box, as they always seemed weak to me. Unfortunately, the looped phrases have digital artifacts that are pretty audible. The looped phrases may be okay for live work, but I would never record ...
