they're less in-your-face than 404/303;

Which sadly enough is what causes them feel different.
They kinda get in their own way when you are in that creative zone.
If you are willing to take the time to gel with them they can work but that direct access that makes people seek the SPs.

it is more a studio machine oriented while 404/303 are more immediate
the 505 has very similar workflow of the 606.
the 505 sound is near the 303 but the 303 is grittier

Ironically enough the seller could be telling the truth.
The unit did work when you got it so the with the age of the SP-202 it could have simply failed once in your possession.

Is the power adapter you used a Boss power supply or a generic one?

Styleflip skins are pretty good and made from a nice vinyl.
If you order from them or try to do your own pay close attention to the lettering and how it interacts with what you design.

Honestly the ASR-X suffered from the beginning because unlike the EPS or ASR family it was designed as a corner cutting product from the beginning.
The ASR-X is actually a MR with sampling added which is why it doesn't have a sound similar to the ASR-10.
