I did resolve the problem - it seems that there was something about the EX file that I got from the Roland sites (i.e.more than one) that the upgrade didn't like. I did post a separate thread about it at the time. So I don't need you files but your offer of help is much appreciated.

Found a link to the Yahoo SP-808USERS group and they've got a working version of the EX upgrade file on there. Go to the Files folder, ignore the OSUPDATES folder and go straight to SP808EXv1001forSP808.zip.
