Don't get the Dark Energy. Doepfer sutff doesn't sound nearly as good as Synthesizers.com's. If you decide going for an Eurorack, you're better off with Tip Top Audio, Cwejman, Livewire... Driver support for the 606 has been dead for a while. There is no support for 64-bit systems as far as I know, but you could try anyways. The driver on the official page was written for Tiger but maybe you're lucky.

These are by far the best series of Electribes. No menus, cheap, very tweakable and loads of fun. Especially the ER-1 (I don't know why the drums are PCM samples on the EM-1, ESX-1 and EMX-1, when the drum synthesis features on this box are so great).

I think the 4-track sequencer and 8-voice polyphony are fine for making beats (and anyway, if you run out of voices, exporting the whole mix to the computer and then to one pad is really very straightforward). And if you intend to use it for gigs, you'll mostly sample loops and phrases, not a huge ...

And in any case I always chop breaks "manually" (adjusting start/end points), partly because it's more precise and partly because that was the only way to do it in the 404, which was what I used before. The 505 has got a better chopping system, in the 606 you only have autochop and can't manually adjust the chopping points. With the "pad" synth this ought to be very easy, as I assume each pad is assigned a MIDI note, and should work with just using an external arpeggiator to trigger the synth.
With samples, since the 606 isn't able to chromatically tune samples, I don't think this is easy enough to be worth the effort ...

The pads on the SP-606 are very different to those on the 404, they are harder, more sensitive and do not go down like a button when you press them (which is what I most hated on the 404).
