brought an sk-1 a while ago. I played with it but havnt really used it for anything. Never realized the ill sounds you can get with this- tru grime. anyone have any tips or tricks?

its good for creating homemade drum sounds. hook up a microphone to it and sample your hand smacking the top of the mic. then detune it for a sick kick drum. its also sick to record and tune your claps and your human beat box hits.

No tips from me; just leeching Any chance of posting some samples from it in the Library? I've always wanted one of these for the old-school goodness they are purported to bring

i've had a coupla SK1s over the years. straight outta the box, my fave sound is the "flute" setting w/ the portamento in use. it creates a no-attack pad w/ rubbery note transition that worx really well in behind stuff.
i'm also a big fan of the organ sounds on there...like pipe organ and jazz organ or whatevs.
one cool thing is the "one touch" function. so you click it into 'record', play a melody, click back into 'play' and then hit the "one touch" button. each time you hit it, you get the next note in the sequence.
the COOL thing is how they can be circuit bent. it may be a little too much information, but here's a thing i posted in my blog earlier this year about my modded-out SK-1:

I don't have a SK-1, but I DO have both the PT-1 and an SK-8, which I use quite often.

I believe the PT-1 was before the SK-1, but it is quite smaller than the SK-1.

The SK-8 is a sampling keyboard and you can loop and reverse up to four samples, each .7 or 1.4 seconds long. Quite awesome.

the sk-8 is a great little keyboard, for sure, for sure.

I have an sk-1 and they're pretty cool. I'm gonna send mine off to get it modded for 150$, fairly cheap plus the guy gives you credit in exchange for toy keyboards. The hands are to0 shaky to do that fine solder work myself... But there are many documented mods on the net

The flute sound and portmanto effect are very cool. One thing you can do with the portmanto effect is put the slider on solo2 (or 1 for a slightly different effect) hit a low note, release it and immediately hit a high note, by playing with this you can get different kinds of attacks and upward slides. I also like adding ring modulation or running the sound thru an amp sim (on the sp555 actually), or even the bit crusher if you want a kind of musical fax modem effect. I've used the sk-1 to resample drum hits for extra grit as well. It seems to add some kind of bass oomph to the attack portion of everything it samples.

I heard that t. reznor used a modified sk-1 extensively for the With Teeth album. People are crazy with their mods of this thing, mainly because it's been around so long and the circuit isn't integrated. People build modular synths and turn the little buggers into true monsters.
