anybody used?

whats the workflow like? can you store samples? is the sequencer easy?

i know it wont be as instant reslonse as an SP404 . but comparative to an SP505 perhaps?

. always thought about an MPC . however the OG models have a track history of needing replacement parts . The new MPCs are a bit too pricey.

The ES1 can be had at a deecent price .

negative
it has less time for sampling
only one-shot mode
lower quality bitrate (33hz)
volume is a bit low

positive
motion sequences (You can record knob movements for each part. One knob per part and the EFFECT , ROLL, and REVERSE Keys)
resampling
chop (sort of)
solo/mute mode

sequencer
TR-like workflow (check roland tr 808 or 909); it has realtime also, but it's less elastic than SPs: but you can use shuffle to funk the beats

this machine is different than SPs and MPCs

aha , thanks for the insight . im looking for something with a slight different feel to an SP . i got the SP505 . had the 404sx ( the 505 definately made me slow my pace .. but in a good way)

the sonics of the ES1 seems pretty phat . i enjoy expanding to different work flows . keeps the output fresh

if you're searching for something different from SPs, the ES serie is a good and uncheap way to go
ps
i got an SP505 too, weird in some way, but cool machine

i really enjoy the 505 .

sample banks . the effect are quality . sturdy sequencer ( 4 channels)

. from what i can tell the ES1 has a very free flow sequencer (but with quantize optional) .. but very accurate strike placement (in regards with how you play)

cheers EllaGuru

It's more of a drum machine that samples, and then you create 4 bar loops of when you want pads to trigger. But it has some descent effects, and it's got some warmth and grit to it. It's not quite like the other samplers from the SP line. But you can definitely save your samples to a memory card. If you load them on to your pic/Mac, you have to use 2 digits for their title. (Let's say you have a .wav file called "Kick 1". The ES-1 can't load that. You'd have to rename it 01.wav, (goes up to 99 I think??). Then it will load with no problems. A slight annoyance in having to rename all your favorite kicks, snares, toms, crashes & so on into numerical.wav files, but it's doable.

If you need more power, upgrade to the Electribe ESX-1. You get more filters, multiple outputs, and you can use 8 bar loops instead of 4.

yes
and you have valve to power the sound
you have 3 simultaneous fx
you have a sort of keyboard mode to play sound in gate mode [but only mono (...so there isn't not only oneshot mode on the esx)]
you have arpeggio on it
you have synthesis capabilitis on it (adsr lfo for pitch, cutoff, amp, pan)
and you have the cool start point knob too on it

Any SP & Electribe ES-1/ESX can make a wicked combo. But they are definitely very different machines. Spend time figuring out one before moving on to the next. Once you know what each is capable of making beat wise, you'll have a idea how you can make them work as a team. I found using MIDI just made my sp303 go ballistic once after I slaved it from my EM-1. It probably could have worked out better if I had any clue how to get the cc numbers of the SP303 to trigger on the right pad of the 16 of the Electribe. Probably something I'll look into next year.

...unfortunately i don't think the 303 sends/receives CC...take a look at page 71 of the manual...

long time esx user here.. i LOVED the esx and should have never sold it. I have been using a circuit for a while and got rid of it and think im going to pick up the electribe 2 sampler.

Anyway.. I noticed in one of the comments "quantize optional" Im not sure exactly what you meant by that.. but the tribes are locked to the 16 steps. You could resample yourself drumming the pads but it would be clunky..

I recorded myself playing the tribes into my sp404 and added in effects and whatever to kinda "finish" my beats. Then exported to the memory card.

it looks like you can set the quantize . I could be wrong. I vision the sequence input to be like an SP1200 . natural notation strikes . ie no electronic adjustment from how you played the patterns in

Take my word for it.. The electribe a are awesome.. But they are all locked to 16th steps. There is no turning off the quantize without awkwardly resampling yourself to a sample slot.. That's pretty much why there are so few of us making boom bap on them.. And why there are so many electronic and dance/house type YouTube videos for them..
