Yo, I'm in the SF bay area, and I just found out about that "KUSF rock 'n swap" vinyl convention thing they have at university of San Francisco campus... anybody been to this? I'm just wondering what's up with it as far as selection, amount of vinyl, and prices and if people are willing to negotiate.

record fairs are dope but a different game from my experience, expect an overload of very desirable stuff for prices that will surely thin out your wallet, stuff doesn't really slip through the cracks there like it can in some record stores, still good deals if you compare things to what they go for on the internet, but stuff is definitely priced accordingly

also don't sleep on the cheap boxes, i always tend to over look those at record fairs cause i'm always geeking out on all the dope shit thats out, but plenty of quality stuff gets put in there cause dealers are trying to move stock, and the more common/less desirable (or scuffed up) stuff gets priced low cause they want it to sell, or the dealer will be more specialized in rock stuff and a slightly scuffed desirable soul or jazz LP will get tossed in the cheap bin cause they don't really concentrate on those genres

you'll probably find yourself getting stuck at a few dealers tables, while others don't seem to be as appealing, but make sure you check all around before you spill your cash at one table, because then you'll walk up to another table and see a heavy wall piece or something that you would have rather spent your dough on than those 5 soul-jazz records that you dropped 12 a piece on at the second table you hit

as far as negotiating goes, it usually happens, you'll hear plenty of others doing it, just gotta make sure you don't rub somebody the wrong way, i usually let them price me up knowing what it should add up to, see what they say, usually if your spending 40/50 or more they'll knock some off, and if you're feeling it you can try to drop it down a little more, he might be like 85, and you can be like, think you could do 75? if you come off pushy from the get go they can be funny

i guess most of this is kinda common sense, but i have it all typed up so i'm gonna post it anyway, hopefully there is something helpful in there that you might not have thought of though, enjoy the digs man!!

Thanks for the tips. I got a few hundred saved up and I'm ready to throw down on some good shit. I'm a pretty experienced flea market negotiator so I think I'll be able to haggle and get some deals.

Thanks bro. No, I wish I can go, I live in Puerto Rico but I know a few beat cats in SF that would be down. We get record conventions once a year here at the mall. One time I found a bunch of Bernard Purdie records for $2 bucks each and some ancient reggae from 1970, it was cool. They skyrocket the well-knowns though like Beatles, Shadows Of Knight, Hendrix albums but the stuff they don't know, is dirt cheap and makes you proud to have knowledge on them.

Man records cost bank in the bay, I try to look anywhere but here....Seattle and random Oregon spots gave me the most records for the smallest prices. THNKS PNW!
Actually the last cool shit I found in the bay was in your area of Concord while I was visiting my grandma.

I run through all the spots in concord pretty often. Hella thrift shops, there's a Rasputin in concord, and a place called Half Price Books is pretty legit. I make my best finds at Amoeba in S.F. and Berkeley. And the Rasputin in Berkeley is good. Hit up the Vallejo Rasputin a while back and copped a super legit Japanese import from the dollar bin, its like some orchestral shit and sounds like a kung fu movie soundtrack, nothing but Japanese writing on it too so I can't even read shit on it. I'm just hitting up the Rock n Swap to scope it and hopefully cop some cool shit. I'm pretty stoked. Digging is one of my favorite pastimes, especially if I'm digging through good shit.
