Are softwares like FL Studio or Abelton Live really needed?

I'm going to get a 303 soon so I just wanted clear things out before I bought anything else.
hard question.
personally i tend to use ableton live to edit/mixing/mastering tracks. everything is recorded from outside (except certain vsti). it totally depends on your workflow. in reality, with an sp606 you could have best of both world: the 606 is cool as a controller/soundcard.
