Hey guys I'm basically after the cheapest casio/etc piece of trash keyboard i can find that has even just halfway believable sounds.. doesnt have to be pro sets, just good enough that with a bit of processing and dirt thrown in a mixed bag with vinyl samples it sounds good enough to use...

doesnt need filters or envelopes or fx or anything like that, just u know like, 100 preset sounds of instruments...

Also would prefer smaller than large (25 or 37 key or whatev)... also no internal speakers as that will weigh it down/etc too much as well

Im not sure if you're looking to buy new but you might want to check around thrift stores and yard sales, theres some treasures to be found.

i got this casio sa35 two years ago from an open air sell (every sunday morning near a train station here), 5€. some sounds, well filtered or distorted, are cool. i bought it to try some circuit bending but until now lazyness won
(shitty webcam quality picture sorry)

I've got Yamaha PSS-680. there are presets and ability to modulate things and tweak shit, super cool to experiment, ability to achieve interesting sounds (not only noise). there are a lot of keys, but they are small. and internal speakers are muted when phones jack is present (there are also left and right channel outputs)...

The Casio SK-1 and SK-5 are classics. Greeeeeat flute sound, a few other good things. They get bought up for circuit bending but you can still find em cheap.

Just picked up a casiotone 610 last week, thing's a beast. It has 2 pretty great flute sounds, and a couple others that are amazing. There's also a 'sustain' button that should have been added to all the Casios.

Aside from that I have an SK-5 and an MT-35. The SK-5 gets used frequently for the piano and flute sounds. MT-35's decent...

Anyway, I recommend buying every Casio you encounter.

I used to collect old keyboards like this, and the best drums are in casio and concert mate , toy pianos, you need to use isolator on them but beleive me you they thump like nobodies buisness.

I suggest looking into the LK series...get one of these second hand for 40 or so and you have a touch sensitive midi controller with a decent sound bank.

if you are looking for a good, cheap rompler and are ok with using a vst and dont need a midi controller, you can buy the korg m1 rompler vst for only $50. This includes all the expansions ever released for it...making it one hell of a deal

By cheap, if you mean less than $500.00, this keyboard sound's AWESOME...super bad ass Rhodes-ish, Hammond-ish sounds...Nice Grand, Upright, etc. sounds too...the other sounds are what you'd expect, but for the price, it sound's as good as a few pro grade workstations in the sound sample dept.

perhaps too big/too many features though.. a few less keys, no speakers, no sequencer/etc to cut down on space

just looking for an old yamaha or casio or something that just does like '100 real instrument sounds' or something

look at the yamaha PSR series for reeaal cheap but usable 90's rompler sounds...I have a PSR 230 (too big for your needs) but it has the 100 sound bank (and actually several are not bad!)...it was rotting in my parents basement for years but i grabbed it to use as a midi controller and was impressed in the sounds (especially for sampling/mangling) for the age/price range.

yeah, i'm the same ^^ way with a yamaha PSR 179 (or something) that has a million sounds i ignored for years until i realized that a few of them are actually pretty good. loads of not-good, but a few surprises in there.

casio SK-1 was my first keyboard back in the 80s. it samples AND has real pitch

I agree with fauna, the flute sound is pretty good too

...yeah, it's a bit bulky...BUT it really does sound great for the price. ...and it has an SD card slot...you can load your own sounds into it.
