hey everybody
ive been using my sp303 for quite a while but just started recording my beats in multi tracks in a daw for better mixing and somewhat easier pattern sequencing maybe two years ago

ive always used a friends set up which was: a pc with windows xp, cubase sx3 a motu traveler and my sp303.
id plug the midi out in the traveler to my 303 and and audio out of my 303 into the motu. everything in cubase was already set up so all i would need to do is create a new session, add the mono or stereo tracks i needed, select the sequence on the 303 (pattern sequence-remain-number of sequence u want) and once i hit record it would automatically begin playback

i now have my own setup, i just got an audiobox usb, ive got studio one and cubase sx3, my 303 and a 404

i have been trying on and off for over a month now to get it all to work the way it had at the studio, im thinking its just some kid of problem with the way i have things setup in cubase. is anyone familiar with this process? i literally spent over 2 hours w tech support from sweetwater and over an hour with presonus (trying to use the audiobox and Studio one daw) i am losing time and sleep over this issue please help!

But I can walk you through it if your using Cubase sx3. I did it in sx1 but I use both. I don't know about studio one but the midi menu might be similar.

First up, you do not need to worry about the midi cable at all..

I can't help with cubase specifics but general DAW tips from me:

1) check preferences ot see that soundcard is selected. also look for 'input' activation or selection here.. some cards you have to 'turn on' the inputs separately.

2) create audio track (guessing you can do this) - check that it's taking audio from the right track, turn on arming/record monitor..

3) check system tray/start menu to see if your audio interface had a mixer-software panel installed.. you might need to setup the inputs in that or something

ok. Well im not sure how to set up MIDI on the 303 and the 404, maybe they automatically are set to me a MIDI slave. If thats the case then they should be ready to go.
In cubase, you have to go to "Devices" then hit the devices tab and make sure that it recognizes your MIDI interface in the default midi inputs tab.
Then go to "Transport" and hit "sync setup" and make sure that your midi machine control is accepting your midi interface and you might have to play around with selecting different options in here and then hitting play in cubase to see if your 404 responds to the midi messages. This is the trial and error part. might need to send midi clock data, might just need midi machine control. But this is the window you will need to juggle settings till you get your 404 playing when your cubase plays. The MV just needs midi machine control and i think midi clock. i stay away from midi time code or (MTC) always gets weird with me.
Make sure all of your audio inputs are set up and receive the audio.
Everything should be set up to press play in Cubase and it should send the start message to your sampler and make it play as well.
Mute the tracks so you can track out everything separately and it should be easy to get everything recorded separately and sync up because as soon as you hit record in cubase, then play, it should begin on point hoping that you dont have latency issues.
You might have to play around with the Midi setup a little because you never know what the machine(sampler) is set to if you cant manually set it yourself. The MV allows you to set it as a MIDI master or slave (to control or be controlled). I had a sp 555 and i remember setting it up to be a midi slave to my tacsam dp 02. Dont remember if i had to do anything to the 555 because plug in the midi cord but you can probably look at the manual for all that info.
With a little trial and error in whatever program you have you should be all good. If you have Cubase SX3, rock that! I dont know about Studio one but cubase is a pretty cool program and the EQ-ing and mastering with VST's n shit is pretty nice. SX 3 makes it a little harder for me to do parallel compression that in SX1 (with the waves plugins) but theres a nice tutorial on how to do that and its worth learning if you wanna get into mixing.
