is he actually doing nothing? i've seen him play live a few times, but at FUTURA i was real up close and he just hit like one button....not even using the pattern sequencer he just played his track out and occasionally turned knobs. i dunno it sounded amazing and i just went back to dancing...keal wrote:Cuz he is. But its the future ya know? Dudes here talkin' bout using ipads to dj. What would that look like? Its all good though so long as the music's right. ANYONE can dj nowadys, so the the art is in the songs you choose.

You kind of hit the nail on the head there. 99% of people don't care how electronic music is played live, they just want to dance.
I'm in the nerdy 1% who care! I can rock out to whatever but I get a lot more enjoyment out of seeing "live" music. Knob twiddling is fun but doesn't qualify as "live" for me. We're def seeing a lot more "live interaction" with MPDs/MPCs/SPs and other gadget acronyms than the previous decades of electronic music though.
Well, kinda.

I think the one who performs live should be maximum busy all the time and should be very flexible in term of playing (impos, something went wrong, changing plans etc)..
Re: SP-404 as a Live Instrument? Brainfeeder member says "YES"
I think it just all depends on the type of "musician" one is. If you play the guitar/bass/drums you'd feel good watching a band play cuz that's the music you do. If you make music on a sampler, for me at least, you'd like to see someone who uses a sampler too to make music but in a performance setting no? I exclusively use the SP's to make music so I love the fact that these guys use the 404's for their sets no matter how it might look, seeing as how thats more or less how it looks when one is composing on them (like if someone was watching you make a track on a sampler I mean).genn bo wrote:same here, i'm in the nerdy 1% too =]KOMSAT wrote:You kind of hit the nail on the head there. 99% of people don't care how electronic music is played live, they just want to dance.

Re: SP-404 as a Live Instrument? Brainfeeder member says "YES"
I'd like to add, that I like to understand what is happening when someone is performing, be it a sampler or a midi controller or anything else. I don't get it when someone is performing live turning one knob through the whole set and the tunes that are performed don't differ from the ones that are rendered...
I mean there must be some LIVE action, something has to be different and entertaining. Otherwise for me that's just showing your music.
The debate on what's live and what's not can be infinite, but by the end of the day it doesn't really matter as long as the tunes make your head nod =]]

Agree with this. I'm all about using a sampler to play live but PLAY THAT SHIT. Bang on some pads in rhythm to the music.genn bo wrote:I don't get it when someone is performing live turning one knob through the whole set and the tunes that are performed don't differ from the ones that are rendered...

Re: SP-404 as a Live Instrument? Brainfeeder member says "YES"
I definately have a lot of respect towards people who play their shit live. But one of the reasons I started to write electronic music was so I didn't have to "play" my songs live. The reason for this is because I usually tend to get really sloopy when playing live. But maybe when I get more comfortable playing live, I'll start "playing" my songs.

Re: SP-404 as a Live Instrument? Brainfeeder member says "YES"
so in my case the dilema about playing live is somewhere between what F.A.M.E. are talkin and what ZomB wrote in the last post...
