Don't believe the hype. If you want to do computer music...pick a daw and get a cheap ass plastic MIDI USB drum pad thing and save $300 of your hard earned dollars.
I'm with LURKIN on this one....

Ya'll know beat thang is standalone and you can use in tandem with your computer. You can even just use beat thang virtual and load same file later on the hardware while on the go.... It accepts thumb drives, hard drives and modern sdhc cards and it has a li ion battery. $999 ain't bad for that type of functionality.
Just sayin..... Take away the dumb name and silly lights and it's a dope machine.

OT
i'm always laughing and kidding about the beathang, also in other forums, but those guys have -i belive, but i cannot verify- well developped the sp606/555 concept: 1 machine wich works with a pc but also a standalone (i don't know if that works also as a soundcard: that was the real strong point of the 2 sps...)

The potential with the Ren for me is being able to work on a beat on your hardware MPC and then be able to import programs, sequences and samples as well as audio and midi files to the Ren software.
Only thing though, is how good the software really is.
As for me, I'm not getting either the Ren or Studio. But I do see myself with the MPC Fly as a road piece. That looks slick as hell and for the iPad2.

I tend to agree, but only if they fail at doing the software part right. A really streamlined dedicated user interface and plenty of features would make it a powerful tool.
But.. then it should still be stand-alone too if I'd consider grabbing it over a regular PC, DAW software and a nice midi controller.
So far I'm not really interested at all knowing these won't be stand-alone machines as well as controllers. Pretty expensive for what is basically just a controller. I'm also just very satisfied with what I've already got, so consider me biased a little.

Finally got to take a look at the MPC FLy for the ipad. I talked a bunch of shit about having a device committed tot he computer but i never said anything bad about the ipad. This shit looks pretty dam sweet! I like how the interface looks like the 2000xl. If they make the software a 2000xl inside of an ipad then im sold! If they start trying to add a linear multitracking and a bunch of other dum shit then probably not. Its cool to see waveforms and all that nonsense but a drum grid and mixer never hurt. Keep the MPC software very similair to the actual machines and you got a hit. Same screens and functions!
Fuck yeah.

I still don't get using a controller with an iPad. The whole reason I use the iPad is the touch screen. Beatmaker 2 will probably be better and it sucks.

I agree with you for the most part, but a touch screen doesn't have velocity sensitivity on the pads. Such a controller (probably) does.
Then there's the size of pads and hardware-ish feel. Nah, I can see why they would want such a controller.

Here's the thing though, if I wanted something that works like an mpc with velocity sensitive pad.....I would just get an MPC!

iPad and iPhone can simulate velocity sensitivity using the excelleromemter. Many apps use this feature already. It doesn't work the best but at least you get more range of sound by using a glass screen. If you use a midi controller most of the big apps support full velocity sensitivity. I generally end up using the piano roll editors and change my velocities manually.

Yes and I couldn't agree more with you. So far I'm not even thinking about selling my trusty MV8800 for any of these controllers.
The only thing that somewhat interests me is if such a hardware / software combo could really speed up the process of making beats. Loading projects on the older hardware-only gear can be so slow.

Re: The New MPC "Renaissance" for 2012
It would be totally faster. Thats the point of it but a lot of times the ease of use hinders your process. I just put my MV in the closet to get away from it for a while and only rock on the sp808 and sp 404 comboed up with massivbe effects. Im having way more fun just using machines where i have to manuall chop things and take a different look at breaks since i cant just go in and set up slice markers and get everything done in 5 seconds. The MV is great but all those dam screens and patch- audio phrase options and blah blah. Kinda get overwhelmed and forget that i was making a beat in the first place. One time i got so deep into adjusting my LPF on my patch and playing with the attack and pitch that i forgot i just sampled a dope ass jazz track.

I agree with you wholeheartedly, Spring. I've got the ASR-10, which is a phenomenal and powerful sampler, yet the work flow on it is really disadvantageous. Forget about file saving formats, it's just disheartening to know that when I'm in a groove, I have to stop the track, scroll back and forth through the menus in order to correct something.
I'm trying to sell the damn thing. I love it to death but I need to be able to bang out tracks without having to get lost in the adjustment of my wav sample's settings.
I fell in love with the SampleTrak because it does the exact opposite. I can sample something while playing my track, the workflow is instantaneous, and I can degrade the sound quality as much as I like.
