yeah, that's sorta what i was getting at. its been pointed out before but i don't understand why the 404 didn't build on these qualities of the 202, rather than developing pitch and time stretch in a different way.
Word, homie. So I'm not fully clear, the "pitch shift" on the 404 changes the pitch but also time stretchs it so that the sample plays at the same length? It's like pitch shift and time stretch at the same time? Is that what you guys mean?

if i remember correctly, the pitchshift on the 202 will: lower the note of the sample, keeping it at the same bpm (pretty much). the time stretch will change the bpm...i can't remember if it messes with the pitch too tho.
edit: Note: the timestretch sounds GOBS better than the timestretch on the 404...there aren't nearly as many artifacts on the sound.

Yeah thats what I meant. We need real ole skool pitch shifting on these suckers otherwise it's quite limiting. At least for me it is.
yea you know as I start to become more familiar with the 404, I'm realizing how much more I like live looping, playing around with chopped sounds, and messing with live effects. The non-saving bpm of the pattern only makes me not want to record a beat even more because I have to put in the bpm every time I want to play it. Is this just me or does anyone else see what I'm sayin?
when im just jamming around like that i record it just off my monitor speakers and name the track the bpm and pattern number
then when i go back to it and record for real its all there

i'm with you completely, dude.
when i'm using the 404, i hate committing to a BPM. most of my saved Patterns can be played at any reasonable BPM, so they are diverse and can easily be used when i MIDI Sync other gear together.
it would have been nice if they had these in the 303 & 404, but it's all good anyway
