You need a compressor with a key in. Put the compressor on the sound you want to get quieter. Make a copy of the sound you want to trigger the ducking and put it the key in. Now everytime your key hits the track will duck(how much depends on threshold settings and attack release etc.).

good idea im off to doo it.

My first instrument was a bass guitar, I got that around 6 years ago. It's a no name bass just for practicing purposes and doesn't sound good at all when I try to record it. So mostly I stick to sampling bass as well.
I do have two keyboards, though and if I run them through my multieffects pedal with some distortion and other stuff on they sound really cool. Most often I use deep strings or flutes for this.

Mostly I get my basses like that from using Isolator. I just put the bass or the kick on a seperate pad and boost the bass till I get that earthquake effect. Also with a tinge of Pitch Shift, twisting the pitch knob to the left, you can get a rumbling effect. A good example of this is on my page at Myspace, check HomeGrown Greenery. Listen to that bass line, that was a cumbia sample mutated with Isolator and pitch shift.

On what machine is that? SP-303? SP-404? On the SP-404SX at least it doesn't have such an effect at all. All it does is filtering, adding noise and semi-random pitch wobble. No compression at all.

Bummer. Would've been nice to have a different kind of compression than effect 12.

Errr so not I'm afraid. Effect 13 is the equaliser which does equalising and nothing else.
