I have a 201. It was my first synth. and yes.... it is a little plasticy. But the i like the controls and if you want to learn about synthesis, it's an awesome learning tool (they actually used them in some schools in japan for that purpose). I like the sound of it (ive set up all the basic waves on the patch bank and I take it from there in realtime rather than using the presets as presets I suppose). When I was looking at getting my first synth, I looked at the micron (I didnt like the interface) and the microkorg (the keys were too toyish for my taste)- both sound great though. So 201 was a good first synth for me. but I think that I'm selling it to my brother and purchasing a mopho and a keyboard. I've been drooling over the mopho for some time.

That's my two cents.

Tator606 has said everything that i would chime in with more or less, but here is my voucher for the mopho anyways. this little guy can be as simple or complex as you need it to be from face melting, cat exploding bass to crazy, spacey generative sounding fx patches.

mopho sounds like its perfect for me

There is also a little mono synth called the MFB synth I or II.
It's compact has knobs and I think you can get them pretty cheap on ebay.
I have one it's pretty fun to tweak the knobs and you can run audio thru it. The pitch does drift a little. I payed 260 for it-worth it.

Alright, last post i'll say about the Mopho. The past few days, esp since this thread has started i've been using my mopho with my 606 only, not even a midi keyboard. I've been using the sequencer to do 16 step basslines, sample it, loop it, add effects, use my 606 for playing live drums/sequenced drums and sample crazy droning noises from the mopho and then play all those while running the mopho to the audio in and mfx live without sampling and it has been more fun than anything i've previously done. I will be hooking it back up to the midi keyboard for easier use, but you certainly dont have to have one to have a lot of fun. I just wish the 606's audio ins and outs were cleaner. But the mopho sounds good with reverb and delay from the 606.

My biggest gripe with the Mopho is the lack of knobs. Generally speaking, if a synth is dependant of being hooked up to a computer for programming, it's not for me. Therefore, I'd much prefer the Blofeld over the Mopho. Analogue purists will object to this, of course, but I really don't see the point. If I could have one hardware analogue or VA, I'd go for the Virus TI (which is VA) over the Alesis Andromeda (real analogue).

Just my thoughts.

the blofeld and the mopho aren't that different in terms of knobs,

just that the matrix is displayed on the case on the blofeld, so its a bit easier to remember where stuff is...

I think in terms of sound character, they're opposite ends of the spectrum..

Having said that,
I love my blofeld


As for analogue vs. digital.. it depends entirely on what the person wants... i'd go for the andromeda!
