SP-404 as a drum machine?

I'm fairly new to the 404, and my question regarding this is: what is the best way to make very fast breakcore style drum loops on the 404. I've tried looping a lot of different drums while recording and then doubling the bpm, but I'm wondering if a midi sequencer might work better. I have very minimal experience using midi, but it sounds like some people on here are saying that they connect the two up and use the sequencer to sequence the drum samples on the 404.
If a midi sequencer is the best option, does anybody have any suggestions on good ones?
