Hey Georges Brazil I was checking out your page last night and I like your work a lot, how'd you show turn out?

Well. Believe it or not, the Charlotte show was cancelled due to snow. Incredibly enough, it was more than 2-3 inches, which I guess in our city is considered a winter storm. Roads were actually pretty shitty, and I would certainly hate to have the death of a party(animal) looming over my conscience...as for Chapel Hill, it was pretty rad. I met some awesome DJs that throw some great parties and also felt like I had the floor moving pretty nice. However, the sound at the club(which is rock and roll early, dance party later) was NOT prepared for my DJ set. If the sound guy would have been on staff it could have been easily corrected, as I wasn't redlining or peaking, and i wasn't really giving my levels a shit ton of juice. So, it was probably something buggy going on with the club sound board. Needless to say, by the time I started dropping some Don Rimini and Crookers, it sounded like someone took to the speakers with diamond coated razor blades. Nasty nasty nasty-and not in the way I like. Oh well. Spring will be the jam sesh for Georges Brazil and I can hardly wait.

That sucks that the resident sound man wasn't in to remedy the sound board problem. I hear you about not wanting to find out someone dying on the way to your show due to bad weather and unsafe road conditions.

Hey, I'm a SP newb that has a Kaossilator. I have been thinking about doing a little tutorial on how I've started using my Kaossilator and Sp303 together.

Is there any interest in this?

^^That would be cool man, I don't own either device - but I love seeing people use their gear.

Kaossilator always seemed a bit like a toy to me...

It seems fun, but its not something I'd actually use in music production really.. So I don't buy one cos im too short on cash to even get all the things i think are 'essential'


How about a nintendo DS with a flash cartridge (so you can load roms and homebrew)
.. The DS Lites sell pretty cheap now that DSi has come out (which IMO is not worth the extra $$ - everything besides the camera can be done using homebrew apps... There is even a homebrew MSN client for DS)

Korg DS-10 is great - synthesiser/drum machine/sequencer combo app.
And the touchpad on the DS is better, cos it has a screen under it to give feedback.

and there are lots of cool homebrew music apps.. Nitrotracker, glitchDS, protein, etc etc.. Heaps!

You can use the DS as a MIDI controller too, via wifi or a DSerial cartridge.


There are sequencer apps too, that you could use to sequence your SP if you got the DSerial connector or made a hacked midi cable.

I find the Kaossilator a bit too limiting once you've run through making tunes with the basic sounds, so I wouldn't really use it as my main synth.

If you can find a cheap 2nd hand synth I would opt for that route, or maybe an old electribe (the one with synth sounds) as you could also use that as a MIDI controller as well.

However as far as a portable groovebox it's cool, I use it instead of an mp3 player on journeys as it's much more interesting.

I agree, it's not much more than a beefed up CASIO toy keyboard to be honest. It has 80 sounds, 20 drum hits/loops and that's it. Some cheaper keyboards have way more, however it's that limited nature that sort of makes it such a interesting product. The Casio SK-1 and the like of old school keyboards are very limited, but that doesn't mean that amazing stuff hasn't come from them.

i don't know man, i think it'd be a great addition to a portable setup with the SP 404.

i can't wait for mine to come.

yeah mang i love my R4 and my DS
but i think I'm gonna get a microkorg or something, because both my DS and my SP always skip(because of the small card).

If your budget allows though, I would look into actual grooveboxes. Especially the MC-808 or MC-909 that both have sampling capabilities. I've traded my MicroKorg for an MC-808 (had to pay a bit extra obviously), but it's well worth the trade. I've still got great synth sounds in the MC-808 and enough tweak ability to generate new sounds for a while. On top of that, an excellent sequencer and FX box, that can sample.

The MC-808 isn't the most user friendly machine Roland ever made, quite the contrary, but once you'll get the hang of it, it's excellent.

Of course, a Kaossilator isn't quite comparable perhaps, but to me it looks a lot like a waste of money. ( I had the Kaoss Pad 3 for a while, but didn't like the fact that it has way too much of a signature Kaoss Pad sound to it's FX, barely usable in anything other than techno, electro or futuristic or glitchy house. Not much of an FX box, even though it has loads to choose from... but everybody will instantly know you've used a Kaoss Pad.)

ill respect the kaossilator when you can plug midi in and play it with a keyboard. seriously though, if they can map it to a touchscreen why not a midi keyboard and make a new revolution

there's already a keyboard like that ... the MicroKorg except the touchscreen.

xiosynth 25 has a touchpad,

its battery powered too. and colour coded with the sp404 lol
