I can go ahead and tell you to check out the Sennheiser 280 Pros. They retail for about $100 USD and are really nice (and they're available at lots of music retailers). They're ideal monitor headphones for musicians in a nice studio, but they can handle a good deal of mixing and composing tasks. Very clear, nice soundstage, and they have a ridiclous frequency response. The bass isn't super powerful, but it goes DEEP. I used them to listen to an old recording I made in my apartment and I could clearly make out the noise of the band practicing in the bar below me that the mic had picked up while recording. I'd never had anything that could reproduce such low muddled tones, and on top of that, the 280Pros still kept a clear definition between what I meant to record and the bleed from the band. That's pretty f'in impressive if you ask me.
