Hi there!
Thanks for a great round with great inspiring samples from Kel. It's really interesting to hear how different chops and different feels all competitors have gotten. And it's cool to see how different stylists chop/design and bring it home til the sounds are all their own.

My favorites/vote this round:

Arizona 4L - Great melodic flips, really nice transitions, great variety and beats feel hard and determined.

Alnitak Kid - great use of those rolling bass notes! And really nice 3d-feel ("depth of field") with sounds being both near and distant.

Others running close, the groove of OTBT, the complexity of DollarLlama, the drumnbass firebeats of LIF. Well there really were interesting things in all beats!

Thanks a lot for the votes and nice words about my own beat!! As usual there's a lot of sloppy mistakes, happy/unhappy accidents etc. But I felt I got lucky with the melodic flips. What probably helped me was that I tried the free (donate) program Keyfinder to analyze the samples. After that I used Chromatic Pitch fx21 on 404fx to transpose some samples so that all would be in the same key (Bb minor). Most melodic lines would fit together pretty well after that.

Everyone loves to hate the Pitch. Well, it's not perfect but SP is all about working within limitations. I found the synthsounds didn't mind getting pitchshifted. The slight chorusing that it added just became another texture.

What was nice with 99bar no Q was this: I started my beat with DJFX-speeding up intro. Started my resampled basic drumloop (sample in loopmode) and let it loop. So I basically built my own sloppy metronome. After that I could improvise/ rehearse with different melodic parts. Erase and make corrections etc. I could also stop the main beat and have it return etc. I didn't really have the time to do it all properly (which everyone can hear), in the end it was just one crappy live take with added fx. Didn't notice anything wrong with the SP/quantize shifting anything.

All in all, the great fun with an SP is to get something finished fast. I've been talking about Brian Eno's concept of Control/Surrender before - and I really appreciate the resampling method as a fast "go with the flow"-Surrender kind of method. If you want to go the Control route, and really structure everything you'll probably end up in a DAW anyway...

i'll try it out again sometime, didn't give it much of a chance really..
yeah, working with resampling can be pretty "damaging" since you're baking everything into each other and moving on but i think once confidence kicks in it can be a satisfying workflow. i moved away from daws because you can always hit "undo" or tweak things even after mastering and would find myself spending an hour double guessing myself honing a kick drum

Why you guys don't put your heads together and provide a short sample each toward #186? A tie is not so unusual...

thanks all for the votes.

i'm happy to work a split battle out if you guys have time.
one on drums
one on samples
one on fx/vocal cuts/synths/other

does this sound chill?

EDIT: actually, i think KINAY'S vote makes DOLLAR D the champ!

You and kinay got it fam. Y'all two can choose the samples. Y'all earned that win. It's more of getting inspired when I enter these battles

Not unusual at all just haven't seen 3way ties in many beat battles ever.I'm down for whatever is clever, and get the next round going.
