Due to some comments (It´s OK with me, no problem at all I can understand) about my beat I decided to upload a video on my sister´s channel (I don´t have one) to show that the beat was made on the SP-404sx. That way you can also check my setup since I´ve never been able to upload a pic on the "Studio Pics" topic.

Sorry for the low quality vid, it was recorded with a mobile phone.

You all did a good work, keep doing it that way.

Damn in that case your entry was amazing! This forum should almost have a battle where people have to perform the beat on a video. That'd be cool.

l i f - gah damn. this is hot. v good... almost TOO GOOD. r u sure u made this on an SP??

Cheers r4ph...! I was pretty pleased myself. Had effed around with the provided break for a day or two and gave up in disgust, until I banged out a new beat using some trap hits i found in my sample library. And yeh, to answer your question - I could never have pulled this off without my SP.... But I will go a little further in my explanation.

Have posted in another thread the probs I've had with the zip drive in my 808. Original drive fucked up discs, but go-figure... I bought the machine new in 1999. Recently found three second-hand replacement drives, the first of which i installed worked perfectly for about 2 or 3 weeks before the clickadeath and the loss of another new disc and a bunch of work (not cheap or easy to find here either).

So I installed a different drive and this one is s l o w a s f u c k. I can't change pad banks or play chops over a drum loop without the loop glitching badly, so for this battle I recorded about 55 seconds of the drums looped/chopped to my Tascam, grit comes from a Harmor synth patch, sounds like a cross between vinyl-dust and an open hihat was layed at the same time.

Fed the recording back into the sp and jammed the sample chops live, did maybe three takes and chose the one I thought worked best, them fed it back for another pass to lay the vocal cuts. All shit I wouldve normally done using resample with the old drive. Might be worth mentioning I probably have my cuts set to 'gate' 98% of the time, 'drum' sometimes, never use trigger (hold button more effective imo).

Mastered in Adobe Audition 1.5, BootEQ vst, some compression/limiting. There was no pattern, quantize, sequencing here, everything came out of banging the pads. I also don't subscribe to the opinion that SP is synonymous with LoFi. It's an aesthetic, not a rule. But yeh, my SP's functionality is now quite limited, I'm forced to multitrack to produce anything and I'm grateful for each track I produce since the mahf*cker could die at any time.

Yo ra4ph, I havn't listened to all the tracks enough to cast a vote yet, but I wonder if you could take the time to remove the dead-links and any DQ's from the poll, would make listening/choosing easier... just a request.

btw, fascinating to watch Neiro'S vid - totally differnt machine and track-construction.. way interesting.

ATLS had the best chops, but Runme Raw had the best overall sound because his beat had more bass and grit!

From a purely musical perspective, I go with Runme, Skinny B and FreshSerfPro, no doubt... these are the tracks that for me, this week at least, show some prod-skills, chop-skills and artistry in overall concept/execution. But...

Vote: Yung Tamagotchi

Figure as long as heads voting for DQ's might as well vote a non-entry.

And before you tell me to cool it, ask yrsf what's the point of using provided samps? composing to a time-limit? or pushing the equipment?

I lack the word to critique each individual.
Overall, crazy good work from everybody, lots of finesse. Really enjoyed this battle.

This being my first, gottah start somewhere. My main mistake, putting a super noisy background sample over the beat, that was pretty harsh and don't really know why I though it was a good idea. Lesson learned.

SKINNY B, gets my vote.
Thats an unexpected flip. Makes me think, early mid 90's hype "go in" type beats that gets an emcee blood rushing.

Sick turn out, glad I joined and witnessed this.
Peace

SpWarlock - well balanced and solid
FreshSerfPro - grooovy
ATLS - sweeeet sounding flip
TheDingo - fire. great chops
Rak - beat and anime sample blend masterfully
gis_sweden - wanted the beat to work like a sound track. not that bad
YUNG TAMAGOTCHI - x im sure it was great
Frankie_LEE - nice slow crispy
OTBT - ok this is goood, but a little muddy...
Doogs - gr8 chops and skillfull use of them
NATAN - dramatic, colorful
NeiroJDC - like the delay fx smart
medearis - sweet experimental submission with atmos
r4ph43l - we used the same loop. nice sound
skinny.b - über funky
l i f - f a r o u t but it works just fine krispigt
ellaguru - tubular... skills
heavyhead. - meditative. like the small rythmic "clicks"
ritchrd - what a trip
Runme_Raw - wacky class as always
selftaught - classic style

4 favs. ritchrd, Runme_Raw, l i f and OTBT.....

i vote ritchrd. the beat is a disrespectful exclamation mark of sounds.
sp-style tradition.
