This sounds like a 'best of both' way of working. Can you explain a bit more please? Do you use one shots or loops or a combination to form the layers?

YOu can use both,

Let's say you have a drum loop on LOOP, the sequencer will record a NOTE ON when you press the pad, if it's in looop mode it will play until there is another NOTE ON aka either you press the pad, or if it's retriggered by the sequencer, in the case of a 99 bar long sequencer, it will probably never retrigger.

unless you rock 6 mins long beat, in this case turn the bpm to 40m/no quantize/no metronome

No one needs to 'quantize' with the pattern sequencer it defaults to 'off' I guess I feel stuck with a beat that has been resampled over and over. Plus I feel a pattern is a performance. Touché

Cheers Rabot - that does sound like a good way work and to be able to correct mistakes in timing from ruining stuff.

I guess there is no note off command to stop the loops running so it’s going to be a case of building phrases, grab the good bit in loop capture/2nd sampler and then string them together in possibly the same way? Hmm possibilities...

No the 555 can't do that but it can loop capture the sequencer.

I am super curious...

I am low on time. Here's a nutshell of a fast microwave un.

Chop musical sample or two or three (or 12). Play samples while tapping out drum beat at the same time and resample performance. Mark ends so it is a smooth loop. Do it again (resample performance) with variation. Do it again with variation. Do it again with variation. You get it... Now, leave all the loops and samples on [gate+loop]. Hit resample. Jump from pad to pad, including some of the original samples (drum one shots, og chopped samples) and build up a track live (no rules on timing or grid...just your own developed timing). With the completed track, resample with dropped effects..compress and eq to your liking. Export, delete samples, start over. There's a lot more, including techniques you develop to get the right sound that might effect the order of how you build up loops (maybe drums first) and levels you use.

Burn cd for your mom to bump in her whip.

Thanks a bunch. Sounds good.

Me too!

Apart from being able to rip mistakes out of the mix.
This is actually genius coz I can swap drum samples in and out using the [del] [sample] so I can change the snare and apply effects to it, change the level or whatever.

And I can also apply realtime effects to the different layers during playback..

On the 555 polyphony is actually tripled when not using resample from 4 to 12 mono or from 2 to 6 stereo!

The 555 has a copy pattern too (I don’t know if the 404 does?) which becomes useful for making variations on patterns.

I'm going to sample some individual drums into the box and try this workflow.
It doesn't even matter what drums I sample coz they are place holders and I can change them completely later - just get things rolling and sort it out later!

The more I think about it the more this makes sense to me.

Thanks for the inspiration!

i have some stuff i run off sequences, and some other stuff i build with resample.

but my fave is the hybrid, where i play a sequence w/ a few things being triggered, and then trigger other pads with my fingers. the fingers on my hands.

usually its keys and chops, but sometimes snares n kicks and whatevs.

In many ways thats even better ;)

Now it sounds like a narly old ninja from the mists of time passed on some great wisdom ha ha

To be fair its the fresh discussion of it here that has started me looking at the sequencer again and I'm loving the power of it. Thats why this forum is such a great place.

Effects seem a little tempremental using the sequencer so I guess it depends what mode you're in to whether the MFX controls respond?

bump

so what exactly is the advantage of using the 99 bar / no quantize / 40 bpm method over just making separate 2 / 4 / 8 bar sequences with no quantize and beginning each sequence when necessary?

maybe i'm understanding all of this wrong.

The advantage is it's a nice hybrid of the two. You get the long sequence as if you resampled but you also have the ability to remove and edit from the sequencer. You CAN just sequence your stuff out into individual 2-4-8 bar sequences and get the same result, but the idea for 99 bar no quantize is to get the same live feel as resampling since you have to play the sample for as long as you want it playing in the song. Hope this helps.
