The SB-246 is cool but I´d go for a RT-223 because it has a broader palette of sounds to play with (including a better selection of bass sounds).

IMHO the SB-246 works better as a stand alone machine (most samples are already processed so it seems a bit pointless to add too much stuff on top of that). The RT-223 seems like a better pair for a sampler, since there´s quite a bit of space to play with FX and stuff.

A working/cheap RT-323 would be even better but would take more time to master.

Just decided to score a Zoom SB 246. It’s a hip hop version of the 234, so it has like a sample library in a mini drum machine, and I paid $130, which is a tad cheaper than a Volca Beats. (Which I do own, but rarely use). I bought a Akai XR20 but it just sorta lives in my closet. I think I’ll take it down, and have a little drum machine street battle, and see who’s got the street cred and which one is the step down. Yeah, no Midi out for the 246, but that’s fine because I can have it slaved to the XR20. I’m planning on getting a RT 323, but it’ll have to wait for now.
