midi sequencer (software)

does anyone know of a basic midi sequencer for mac, preferably free or opensource, that is not a step sequencer? i'm looking for something to build melodies and basslines in on a microkorg from my laptop and/or control the 404 with.
surely something like this exists?

Renoise is a tracker based sequencer.
Reaper is a standard midi sequencer/arranger like cubase/logic.
Garageband comes with osx, but is like a traditional DAW as well.

Those are pretty much the best options. Not exactly sure what you are looking for.

Hey man download WINE (windows app emulator) and then grab a windows app called SEQ24 - open it with WINE.

It's really nice and straightforward, no bells, no whistles. If you use a laptop you will need a real mouse to plug into your computer (cos seq24 requires that you are able to hold r-click and tap l-click at the same time)

I need something that can send a midi out signal, and where i can enter midi notes without a grid. So far i only found step sequencers but i probably need some kind of DAW, haven't used any so far except for Ardour. They're are all so complex, I would like something more basic to start out.
If I am right, Garageband doesn't send midi out signals?

i'll probably do this, then with WINE i can also run SonicStage (minidisc conversion program from Sony)...
