It's pretty cool when you do a few, but it's not really worth the effort...
If you record over it nothing special will really happen
Just the last thing you record over it will be looped.

yeah, i was thinking, it really is a lot of work and in the end nobody really would know the difference between that and the loop button on a sampler, but fun for a snowy day.

so nothing special happens. oh well, thanks.

yeah man, you use tape loops to do some wierd ass shit, like this woman
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G9GJCL3PpYA
that might not be really tape loops, although she might have been doing the droning with a frequency output and alot of tape delays i think, that shit was done in 1965 though, she is a professor at my school in the arts department though, i've taken classes with her, she's fuckin out there, like 75 now, real cool though

yeah alot of that tape loop started in france, called musique concrete or something like that, kinda centered in a specific institute really with a dude called pierre schaeffer in the 40s and 50s, some real interesting and bugged out shit to check out and learn up on, stockhausen is pretty crazy too

splicing and tape loops was the old school equivalent to the loop button;)

This series is interesting:

And if you are only interested in music concrete and looping.. scroll down to the second grey text box.. but its a worthy read esp. if you are younger - makes you appreciate what we have today at our fingertips...

i tried making tape loops just like that ^^ drawing when i was a kid, and there wasn't enough tension on the tape / wheel to actually turn the tape.

i made longer ones (3/4" tape with mic stands as posts) with a friend once. it was a cool process. cool sounds and i learned stuff, but yeah, a lot of work.

something you do once, maybe - unless that's yr fing.

Opening an old thread again...
Made 2 tape loops (or loop tapes...) this evening. Nerdy... Will I use them? Hmmm to early to tell. :P
I took music from a multimedia cd from Twice a man (1995).

Here it is!

Tape Loops. I made this from 2 tape loops. Feels a little strange to load the loop in to the SP-404 and loop them there...
But the result is... well I like it...

Delia Derbyshire was the master:

I've messed with that stuff at work (when there was nothing else to do) many years ago and also had some cheaper reel-to-reels at home.

There's also a way to use a machine for tape delay by feeding the signal into itself along with the signal you want to delay and monitoring the playback (not record) head. You can then vary the tape speed for delay time, but be careful not to have the level on the delay deck up too high (crazy feedback). You don't really need to loop it for that, but you can. I think I've also tried looping one tape through several decks for multiple head delay.
