Grid Controllers...Monome,Launchpad,APC

Post by V-F! »

Anybody here use these or are interested in them?? I'm pretty fascinated by them myself. Only thing is that it seems like they would take forever to set up and I like tools that are pretty immediate. With Max 4 Live out now it might make it easyer just to load up ableton load an MLR patch and just go to work.

yea they seem pretty interesting

especially the man EDISON

http://vimeo.com/7733666

hes rocking them hardcore MPC style

im waiting for the whole spiell to level out and find a "standard" so to speak.
im sure theres an APC 64 or something on the way...
8x8 isnt exactly enough to warrant a buy just yet give me at least 16 by 16 for full sequencing possibilities. add some midi out for external control....then we are talking. (imagine a 16x16 controlling every sample on your SP!!!!   )
...and monomes are way overpriced.
i think you could control sp's if you messed with OSC and Bomes midi translator but the learning curve is still to high for me to consider it as something that i could effectively work into what i already know and love.

Ya I'm on this tip. Waiting to see what is the controller of choice for max 4 live. I also am kind of waiting for a 16x16 commercial grid to come out. You can use two launchpads, but stupidly the usb port prevents you from putting them directly next to each other.

I kind of wish there was a hardware sampler that works like MLR. A Machinedrum might have similar abilities to trigger a loop or sequence from any 16th note quantized. Maybe the linndrum2 will be what I'm looking for. 303 and ableton will keep holding it down for me regardless though.

i feel the same way. It seems like max4live will be the perfect solution. I saw a video of sevenup2.0 and it looks like it's getting really streamlined and integrated within live. I've been thinking a lot lately about downsizing a lot of my set=up so that it's just live,max4live and a monome since i don't have any space in my current living situation to have more than a few things set up at once. also I like the portable factor, that i could just toss the monome in my backpack along with my laptop and then mess with it when i'm in my (art)studio at school. that's the only reason that i'm planning on trying to get one over a launchpad or livid block(which looks really dope with faders and knobs).

the videos of MLR do kinda remind me of a more immediate version of chopping and sequencing samples with the machine drum using the parameter locks.

Yeah, def a dope video.
hes rocking them hardcore MPC style
Well not really as he's triggering loops and pads which hold more samples. It's quite impressive nonetheless, but I fear it's not too useful for anything but that; live usage.

64 noises....

Nah, that's not quite what I meant. The one shots are phrases, not single one-shot samples.

Still impressive though.

So I got a Launchpad and this shit rocks. I use it with MLR and send out to the 303 and record back into Ableton Live. Shit is crazy.

Check out the step sequencing setup with Renoise 2.5b and the Launchpad.

my sequencer when done will have 4x8 grid (or possible 4x16)

Ideally I would have 8x32 but hey... will make a proof of concept first

also for every column of buttons i have an encoder (or possible 2-3 - again.. after the prototype is done and if i have enough money)

My use of the grid is more like traditional drum machine step sequencing - each button represents a 'step' and there are parameters that can be automated per-step (eg pitch, gate length, velocity, 'delay' (leave a short gap before it is played to produce more complex rhythms than being locked onto the step divisions)

also by holding the different grid buttons i want to be able to jump to bits of sequences, create temporary loops in the sequence, reverse, double/half time, etc...

but first i have to get off my ass and do the last 50 or so solder points
Samples.
