i knew what you meant, and bad mixing is not genre specific. i hear it in every genre around.

getting levels right doesnt take expensive gear it just takes ears knowing that the snare is actually loud enough and the kick punches enough...etc. all of these simple things can lead to a more satisfying beat in any genre

it has nothing to do with genres, im glad you feel that way about lofi, but it really is irrelevant to the topic.

now if you want to start a thread on the loudness war go right ahead...

no im not tryin to be on the radio but i want to get em sounding right for my own personal enjoyment. hopefully the sound card will help the situation. I never multi tracked beats before and i dont do midi so maybe i should dabble there too.

if you get a soundcard and multitrack your beats then you will have a lot more control over the final sound of your mix. obviously you will be able to adjust the levels of the individual elements of your beat so you will be able to make things sound more to your liking.

what is your budget for a soundcard btw?


@hurlingdervish bad mixing is not genre specific but then again there is no such thing as a "bad mix", only in genres where it is necessary for a mix to have certain elements. pop music and dance(floor) music especially. remember how a mix sounds is still a very subjective matter.

my opinion on the loudness war.
some people perceive loudness as an indication of quality. i don't agree.
i don't like overcompression as i like dynamics in my music.

that´s pretty interesting stuff you guys have written here. I do alot of single track recordings...actually I only do it that way.

I use an old program called CoolEdit2000 for my recordings. It´s very simple and also just as easy to use. After the recording is done I click on Amplify/normalize...easy as taking candy from a baby. it does it all by itself. An important factor is that you have to be sure that ur SP or other hardware is´nt too loud on the recording in the 1st place..that´s about it...well it works for me for over 10 years and i always say "don´t touch a running system"

I think I`m gonna get http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adobe_Audition pretty soon...just because it´s newer and because I´m curious about it..gonna dl the trial vers. and see where I can get a Keygen for it

love adobe audition. another good alternative (very similar but free) is Ardour, but its a linux based program. if you can get pc booting ubuntu its a great thing to have

am using Adobe Audition3 since 2 days now....one hell of a program..exactly what I´ve been looking for. The mastering is soooo simple that it almost scares me. If anyone wants the full version for free, just gimme a PM (only have the Willy Gates version)
