I record in several ways.. If I doing eastcoast Hiphop then I will run my drums thru an old 2 track cassette tape deck (I bought at a pawn shop for like $10) for that really grit, grimey sound (since I got a 2 track stereo cassette tape deck with VU meters and DBX Noise reduction built in thru a push button, I can just use the line ins and outs, so it's passes thru it's Dirty analog converters)

For Synths.. I will use IZOtope's Vinyl Simulator (WHICH IS FREE AT www.izotope.com) have my settings on a 1930s record sound.. adn add a tempo delay and my synth has a cool effect.. It's like in pieces but still gels together it's hard to explain but visualize saftey glass and when that glass breaks it in pieces but still together.. This can make a song come to life.. almost like a timbaland stuttering effect by using the delay.. You gotta try it to know what I'm talking about.. Using the vinyl it like slows the synth down alittle and combination with the delay.. wow..

I got tons more about almost every instrument except for the didgerdoo

wow, thanks for all the dope ideas. i gotta check out that vinyl simulator thing... does the sony cassette recorder go onto tape, or just through the machine's converters? i have a cool little $50 sony recordable walkman i was gonna use, but i don't think the signal will go through it unless its recording onto the tape. would anyone recommend recording from the 303 through the sony walkman into the computer or through an onkyo dual cassette deck (which i could use just the deck's converters w/o putting through tape)?
also, are there any other benefits of using audacity over garageband other than the timestretch feature?

I start with my drum sounds, recording them lo fi with an akai s20 with a midi keyboard attached so I can get different pitches, then record em to the sp. I sequence fully with the sp404 and record em as a stereo out live to a micro br 4 track and export as a WAV. Done!
