Youll need to be an interface, which will provide you with the inputs and outputs and will also be your soundcard. You can get simple ones relatively cheap, and you just plug your 404 to it with rca cables and your set!

Hi,
Probably would be a USB soundcard or more properly - "audio interface".

I can't make a recomendation based on personal experience, I don't use a lappy and my cards are internal pci ones in an ordinary pc. Probably do well to look at the Edirol range for USB interfaces.

Things to consider...
If your laptop has a pc card (and not the newer express card) slot, Echo have some interfaces that are well thought of, and they'll live in the laptop instead of having to drag a seperate box around which a USB one would entail.
If the laptop has Windows Vista - not many brands have Vista drivers yet, and even fewer have the 64bit version Vista drivers.
Do you need an interface with a 5pin midi port to drive the 404?

eg Edirol UA-25...

The UA-25 has Vista drivers and midi ports.

There are some simple USB interfaces around, often sold as ideal for people to record their vinyl to CD with. With their RCA connectors they look ideal to use with the 404, but I feel these are a false enconomy - barely better than a laptops own built in audio chip - and no midi. The only thing that's good about them is that they are so basic, there's no need to install a special driver, Windows already has a generic usb driver built in. I've tested one of these, and promptly gave it away!

good luck!
Jim
