Hi,

I almost ordered a 404, although I still have a question;

If you end a playing sample halfway by a release of a key on the panel or through midi, you can get a loud click in older samplers. It is not always, so I suppose it happens because on that unlucky key-off moment the wave is not zero or not almost zero, so in fact you are creating a spike in the signal, a sudden drop in the wave from maybe max amplitude to nothing.

It mainly occurs in low tones, bass tones and it is quit annoying, in fact in makes it impossible to do deep basstones in a flexible way.

A solution could be an envelope (release ADSR), but although the 404 is full of effects, I don't see anything like this in the 404 manual. It may be built-in, or maybe I missed something.

Is this solved in the 404 by some short key-off release envelope, or maybe you guys know of a workaround?

Best regards,
Tamme

Welcome!

In my opinion, this isn't an issue with the 404, but I know what you mean. Like the Korg MS1, it's awesome but I don't use it for that reason alone. Loud, unwanted clicks

With the 404, there are workarounds for everything, some more crude than others, and many of the FX have some sort of "hidden alternative function", for example MFX22 can be used for decent "ADSR" (more like volume automation) when resampling with some practice. You could FX-grab the last couple of milliseconds of your bass sample with some short reverb and get rid of a click that way.

Hi Kel,

Thanks for your reply.

I'm not sure if I understand what you mean.

I'd like to be able to choose the length/ending of the playing of the sample live and randomly without clicks in a live situation, so I can not prefab it beforehand.

Do you mean that if one cuts off the playing of the sample (let's say by a midi-keyoff) the reverb will continue, fill in and creates a subsitute-ADSR-release?

I think I'm just over-complicating things. I think you will not have any clicking issues with the 404 when releasing the pads. There aren't any dedicated ADSR settings.

I'd like to be sure about that.
Have to try in a shop somewhere.

Are there any of you 404 owners who can get hard clicks by releasing a pad or midi halfway a playing sample?

Ah, good point. It might be dumb luck that none of my three SP-404s have this issue. Let us know how that goes?

I suppose all your 404s are identical,so it should be about the use of them.
Good to hear that you don't have this artifact.

I borrowed an old MS-1 (1995) last week. It does have this key-off-halfway-click or spike with simple low tones. But that is 25 years ago with max 16 MB.
