I ran into trouble trying to upload my vinyl to soundcloud and received 3 copyright messages. Didn't know you had to pay for app.box I hope this doesn't discourage anyone from joining in. I pretty much found everything on Youtube of course.

p.s.The 4th sample is a bonus, I don't expect anyone to touch it, but I hope you do! 1/2 of Yeez' coachella (sunday service) set.

@JOHNSONDONTSURF dude, did you change the samples by any chance, because I'm experiencing some twilight zone shit right now :D
I mean, when I clicked on your 'sample 1' link the other day, it took me to a live version of the M. O. 'You know, you know' - it's the same song, same harmonies, but the voicing and drums are a bit different, compared to the version that's up now ...
Now, personally I don't care, I can do another beat (if this'll get me disqualified) but I honestly think those drum rolls on the live version of the song are a blessing... So I think you ought to put that link back, as a optional - that is if you edited it in the first place, otherwise... Wow. Dunno how it could've happen :D I literally clicked on the link, went to 'YouTube to wav converter' , downloaded it and started working..

That is very strange, possible that you clicked the link and then accidentally clicked another link? I have not changed the samples. The original sample 1 is from the album version. Not the live version. I recommend having another go at it, since you had such blast

it's been a longtime I've battled here !
now my soundcard electrify me so I can't touch it without something on my hands (ground problem I guess)
my 404 randomly on/off
...

It would be interesting if you share the way you make your beat unless you have secret tricks

I started by the end of my beat, this skit should've be the main beat but I finaly made a new beat.
I chop hats and kick from the first drum sample
I took a part of the second guitar skit on soundcloud then put a reverb on chop parts played with them and looped.
After looped my sample, I played my drums over + compression and recorded this on tape.
Tape to 404 with a compression again then EQ then mfx24 slow down the whole beat , cut parts and tried to play it removing the weird tempo/ swing the FX creates
Recorded this on FL (with some "live" FX: filter/ delay) -> limiter -> export
I don't understand why I often make "sad"/ "dark" beat since I'm not in this vibe at all... weird  .

I usually grab the drums as long as I can, not the one shots (well, rarely one shots). Usually I take the kick AND one hit of the hi hat, plus snare and one hit of the hihat (if its a slower beat, so theres enough room), that way I can create more natural beat (with the loop and gate functions off ofc)> only downside is, you cant really go faster or slower because of the corelation between the kick/snare and the hi hat. it is what it is, but I get more realistic loops, which is something I aim for, and because there are two hi hats there (after the kick and after the snare) sometimes it gets freaky in a good way xD love me a dose of syncopated rhythms
Ocassionally (actually I did it on this track) I will copy the drum pattern and filter the lows out, then use it (again, gate and loop functions off, cant stress that enough) as a syncopated fill over the main pattern, kinda moving through the track with variations, just to avoid boring repetitions and to add some spice.
Always start from that. Then, after creating a drum loop, I usually record a take playing with the efx, maybe 2,3 minutes long, and if its a keeper, I move on to other things > bass and harmonies first, then rhythm fills, drum rolls, weird sounds, etc.
After I get some sense of where Im going with the song, some basic arrangements and efx im gonna be using, I start resampling the shit out of it xD
First the take with drum pattern with efx and syncopated fills
Then resample it while adding bass and harmonies
And so on, and so on
Tend to always play the efx live(especially djf looper and delay),if I can, rather than resampling with efx and just hitting the pad where its supposed to go. I also use the delay on the drums, while resampling or recording, perhaps way too often :D

Used the mahivishnu track, some of the guitar sample reversed and a little drum fill thing from the Sunday service sample then threw in a couple of movie samples from some old horror film.

yo,

https://soundcloud.com/blowm/spbb-278-t ... dicated-to

really enjoyed your tricks! here i go:
i just took the Mahavishnu Orchestra "you know, you know". (the "this is dedicated to..."-vocal is from the mamas & the papas)

usually i try to snack out so much "single sounds" as i can get. that means, single kicks, drums, hi-hats and bass or instrument sounds. then i filter (isolate, eq, c.canceller, comp...) the elements. try to make them appear regularly by working out a first sketch
check this vid for effecting/resampling. it helped me a lot to step up my drum game: https://youtu.be/qwIN5vWPEbs

most important for me: i always use the pattern sequencer! even if i have the loopiest loop of the loops, always hit it with the quantize on 4 - to the click! best advice ever nonjuror madnotes (link above) gave me in his videos. so the sample always starts on the 1 (or wherever you want it).

for this beat i completely used all of the 12 seq-pads of 1 bank. the samples needed nearly two banks C/H. i mostly try to keep them in one bank.

when i arrange i take time to exchange the seq-pads so that i can start at pad 1 and just work my way down the numbers. when i think i am done i take a last shot and improvise with all the samples i have made up. sometimes that is gonna be the beat, more intuitive than the 'heady' stuff before...

keeping the seq-loops on a four bar measure helps to not get messed up with the musical structure... i always think of someone doing a song on my beats, so i try to keep the parts on a straight 4,8,12,16...32 scheme. for the song above i additionally created a 2 bar intro and a 2 bar outro.

enough for today. i hope it helps.

ah, the sample everybody used : D
i put the pan-eff on it while recording. so it gives the whole thing a little l-r movement. when i freestyle with the eff i mostly fuck it up so i keep myself on the low with that.

have a nice weekend, curious for your beats!
