I swear if I see another card-less Sp 202 sell for more than 70 dollars I'm going to explode. I am no economist but fuck, a Sp 202 with a card sells for $130-140 on eBay a card-less SP 202 sells for 100 dollars. You can buy a 5v smartmedia card for $60. WHERE ARE THOSE 30 DOLLARS GOING, THAT'S 1/4 OF THE #@$%ING PRICE. And that's is if they are being reasonable, on reverb until recently there was a 202 selling for $225 WITH NO CARD, THERE IS ANOTHER ONE SELLING FOR 300 WITH 2 SMARTMEDIA CARDS CURRENTLY. Id argue its not even worth 70 dollars without the card, 32 seconds of recording time, two banks, four voice polyphony. What are you going to do with that? What y'all think, do any of you see ridiculously priced Sp gear?

Those cards that actually work with the 202 have become increasingly rare... Also the machine itself is becoming more and more scarce as the years progress. It's all supply and demand.

10 years from now it'll appreciate even more in value.. Maybe even double.

Yep - markets for "vintage" gear are not driven by the gear specs as much as by the rarity of the gear itself, and in this case, the memory card as well. Try to buy a real 808 drum machine, or an original Jupiter 8!

You really dont need one, but if it comes with one id get that. I bought mine on the low for 90 bux, didn't come with a memory card but you can still do alot with one.. Using it with another sampler was hhella fun. Im sure tracking with a 4track or other multitracks // software etc would be best also..

You can do more on the internal Memory than on the Card.

the only pros from the Card (i got one) is that you can sample longer.

You can just Play one sample from the Card, so These "ghetto mute Groups" is a pro too in my eyes, but this way you Need another sampler imo.

i made a lot of simple beats using only the internal Memory, never had a Problem so i don't really understand your "rant" tbh.

The Sound alone is worth every penny imo.

All the banks on my samplers are filled, all my samples are usually long. So 32 seconds of sampling time just does not cut it for me, I need that card.

Another pro is the extra 2 banks, that's 16 more potential samples.

I know the sound is worth it but, they cant even break down what cost what, what is then preventing them from selling them for $1000. At the end of the day you are paying for a 16 year old machine that is only kinda "rare", i do understand the price of the cards though.

202 can only Play 1 sample at a time when using Banks C/D so it's not that useful.

when i make beats on the 202 i only use the internal Banks (otherwise it's nearly impossible to do a whole beat on the Card Banks)

i only use Bank C/D to record longer samples and then pass 'em to another sampler (mpc, 303, etc.)

I don't get the point of this thread?
Is the original poster complaining about the cost of a 202 being too high?
It's called supply and demand. Take an economics class.

A 202 between $100 and under $200 is well worth it.

Are you mad cuz you want one, but can't afford it?
Sell some records, collect cans, get a second part time job. Do what you need to do to get it.

You obviously did not read my original post, otherwise, you would see why I made this thread. Read before you post.

I just turned 15 yesterday, I literally just got the option to get a job otherwise, I'd be swimming in gear.

don't get me wrong it is a good machine but if the price does not make sense mathematically what would prevent them from bumping the price to $300.

Nothing prevents any individual from pricing at whatever they choose. But the market will generally not tolerate an overpriced item. It would be a rare sale if someone paid a significant amount over the maximum market value. Basically, if you see an overpriced item, don't buy it. But if the market pushes an item over a certain value that you don't agree with, you have no choice but to either wait it out to see if it goes down, or pay the price. I think this market gives you both, if you look hard enough and maintain patience.

On the other hand, if an individual wants to pay more than an item is worth, the market allows it, and the seller would be very lucky, and happy! And who could blame the buyer if the price is OK with them?

I used to buy vintage metal lunchboxes. There were two distinct markets for them - one was lunchboxes, and the other was collectibles of a certain character or cartoon, or person. There is a Beatles collectible market, and there is a Beatles metal lunchbox. They are two different markets with different buyers and sellers. You can imagine that the lunchbox market just does not demand the same price as the Beatles collectible market. That's just how it works.

I only use loops and one-shots and they are usually long so the card is very useful to me.

I usually have a short intro, so I press a button and when that sample is done I press another button and I tweak knobs and maybe I put some extra effects on it from the 303 or 808.
