Like the title asks, how many songs will you, on average, try and fit into one beat? Also, most you ever managed to make work? Not including drums.

Do you count all the ones you listen to, load in the sampler and then delete after listening to it and it not being cohesive with what your working with

Ha, no, but I'm still interested to know what you're example is?

I'm talking about final song product. Example, whosampled.com lists Public Enemy - Welcome to the Terrordome with 17 different songs (14 songs not including drum samples). That could be wrong, too (more or less).

It shouldn't matter. If you want to play cut and paste to get your track do it. If you'd rather let an old record set the mood on it's own, do that. :)

I've done both and the results = there's no difference in whether the track makes you head nod more or not...it's either good or not good and a lot of that can come down to just how to accent frequencies. Some old records, all you gotta do is loop a section with some more bold eq'ing on the low end and suddenly shit is modern banger, like it was written for today.

So yeah, man. I encourage trying out playing with multiple samples and try to keep at least an ear out for solo instrumentations or instrumentations that you can probably eq and mix out the background music to get (like trumpets on a slow schmokey jazz record) and just play around with them when you're working with another track.

Like..you can make a track where almost the whole track hinges on a simple cut of one record's chorus or something. Then you had that trumpet laying around from that other jazz record you sampled 2 weeks ago...holy shit, it works. Boom...I think if you approach it with jjust a 'whatever' mentality rather than trying to look for something specific, you get more natural sounding results. That's about all I can say. Man I fucking post too much on this forum now. lol

oh shit, doesn't that happen all the time is a pain? Part of the whole process I guess.

To answer to your question o.p.(good question too btw), I try to limit myself. I noticed that since I started doing battles I'm better at this. Focusing on using the strict minimum and reusing a lot of the same samples but repitching,filtering,etc.. Also, I never like to use samples from the same record, from 2 different tracks from the same album. I guess that's personal though. But, I always have one main sample for a track(more if chords), a beat, bass, and oneshots.

I'm thinking I should've phrased it differently or asked a slightly different question to elicit more out of people. I liked that pleb man gave a straight answer. That was helpful. However, I'm also wanting to find out if anyone has examples of their own to share with many, many different songs sampled into one.

Definitely, although I seem to place the track higher when it has many "cut and paste" samples and it still flows - not like a mash-up.

I did this track a few years ago and sliced about 5 tunes up to make it…you can hear it better in the last half of the track. More samples the better!

This one also had 3 or 4…some are pretty obvious :)

It all depends on the track and what sample/samples your working with...if you got a good one that you can loop up and it sounds pretty dope and doesn't get boring then go for it...but if you start out with one thats to short or not interesting enough try and find another sample to fit in there to make it more interesting(not counting one shots, acapellas etc.)The most I've ever used is 3 not counting one shots but thats in Ableton where there are more pitching options available than on my 404.On 404 its usually just one main chop plus one shots and fx etc.

It's all just fun and games for me making music with the 404 allows me to disappear for awhile. So, good or bad, I don't stress about the finished product too much. That being said I like the challenge of grabbing stuff from different songs and trying to fit them together. It almost seems otherworldly when a piece of a song from 50 years ago fits with something from 20 years ago etc. its like a musical crossword puzzle or something. it's fun.

This one has elements from 5 different songs
