Adding effect to a pad waiting to be hit?

Hi,
I have a SP-404SX. Let's say I have two samples looping on two pads and want to fire off different one-shots with different effects. Is there a way to apply the effect to a sample/pad not playing yet?
Also, can I dial in the settings for an effect without it starting to sound?

Or do I simply have to workaround and prepare my one-shots resampled with the FX?

Hold REMAIN. You'll see a light come on showing which pads have the effect. Hit different pads while holding REMAIN to turn on/off effects for pads without triggering those pads.

Manual has more details (and more stuff you'll probably ask about....

)

press REMAIN + MFX to select them all.
