Hey guys,

I've been having fun on the sp coming from an sp, it really got me doing things i never would have normally done with my akai.

i've made a basic loop using the resampling feature, sample, hi hat, kick, and snare. now that i have this 2 bar loop, i want to add a little structure ie) dropping hi hats here and there, taking out the snare and bringing it back in.

how do i do this with with a beat that i made resampling? on the mpc i used to just record my track mutes on my sequence. thanks fam!

What I have been doing is recording the pattern onto a separate pad with eq, compression or whatever effects if I need any, and then whatever you want to add onto a separate pad. then you would hit resample, record, then play both pads to your taste. if you want to create a structured song using the resample method, record separate patterns at whatever length you like then record yourself playing the patterns onto a new pad which will be your full track.
-on second thought, just watch and learn from this tutorial

The 404 and SX are basically "layer only" devices. Unless you use the Pattern Sequencer there is no way I know of to delete or mute notes other than to use Gate while resampling. Example in the video is simplistic but shows how you can resample separate "sections" and combine later. I generally create a simple track and slowly add elements over time- generally ending up with 5 to 12 resample versions. When you mess up you just redo it. I keep all the versions until I am done just in case. Once you have final version you can then resample whole track using effects to stutter, duck, etc.

I kinda just feel my way for how the song should be structured while I'm 'jazzing' it up on the pads without recording. When I decide what sounds best for the flow, then I lay down my drums with the song playing in my head, but only recording the drums. From there, everything falls into place back into how I thought it should sound. You can only resample 2 stereo tracks at a time or 4 mono tracks or 2 mono/1stereo. And once you resample, you can't un-resample unless you treat your older resampled combination pads as an undo feature.

So I guess my tips are: Plan ahead, don't erase previously resampled song-structure pads because they're your restore points. You can even cut out stuff from them to inter mix with later versions.

It's a different method than sequencing, works completely different. Either you dig it, or it's not for you in the end. I find it fun because you just get into making a tune, not playing around with structure and mixing and all that shit for hours on end and have nothing to show for it but a half completed track.
