sp404 compressor VST?

Post by preqwal »

Hi guys,

I've been trying to emulate the 404 compressor in software on other vsts, such as Ableton etc, but I can't get head around why the 404 compressor sounds the way it does?

I was thinking about creating a vst emulation myself, but I first need to be able to emulate it on another compressor.

anyone had any success in emulating it?

I've tried to get "closer" to it using the MV8800 compressor as well as VSTs in Reaper, just some thoughts:

-very fast release
-Lots of sustain
-High compression ratio (more than 8:1?)
-Try ducking compression, like drums on one track and the bass/samples whatever being "ducked" by the drums using Aux sends
-hard knee (??)

A couple compressors to mess with
-Melda MCompressor
-Endorphin Compressor
-Rough Rider
-Camel Crusher

Thanks for the replies guys. Any chance you could give me a screenshot of the plugin in use so I can see parameters and what compressor your using.

The reason why I want it is that atm i'm running everything through the compressor, which means I can't then use other fx to see what it sounds like then through the compressor. A lot of trial and error atm.

On a related link though, Is the compressor on the sp303 the same as on the 404?
